Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s legendary opera The Magic Flute is being retold in a new film produced by Roland Emerich. The trailer for the musical fantasy film was released a few days ago, with the official announcement of the release date.
The film follows the tale of a teenage boy named Tim Walker who goes to the iconic Mozart boarding school and finds passage to a mystic world through the magic flute. Here is everything we know about the film.
The Magic Flute Release Date
The film is arriving in cinemas on Friday, March 10, 2023. Announcing the project, producer Emerich said in a statement, “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterpiece The Magic Flute has always been my favorite opera ever since I experienced this magical story as a young adult. I was immediately drawn to the concept of cinematically reimagining this story.”
“When the filmmaking team approached me with their idea, which I was thrilled to champion. The entire team brought their fantastic vision to the screen in an exciting and innovative way. The Magic Flute Trailer
The trailer shows Tim’s life at the Mozart All Boys Music School. There, he finds himself drawn into the world of Mozart’s classic opera and meets larger-than-life characters, including the Sarastro, Queen of the Night, and a giant serpent.
The official synopsis of the film reads: “A captivating film that follows a teen on two journeys: one into a prestigious boarding school to fulfil his aspirations as a singer, and another into a parallel world filled with fantasy and adventure.”
“Tim has been dreaming his whole life about attending Mozart All Boys Music School, but already his first days there confront him with a hostile headmaster, the stresses of a first love, and serious doubts about the authenticity of his singing voice.”
“When he discovers a mystical gateway in the school’s library, he is pulled into the fantastic cosmos of Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, where imagination has no limits and the Queen of the Night reigns,” it reads further.
The Magic Flute Star Cast
The cast includes Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon as Papageno, Shadow And Bone actor Jack Wolfe as Walker, The White Lotus star F. Murray Abraham as headmaster Dr Longbow, French opera star Sabine Devieilhe as Byrnella, the Queen of the Night, and theater actor Asha Banks as Princess Pamina.
The rest of the cast includes Amir Wilson as Anton Milanesi, Stéfi Celma as Papagena, Rolando Villazón as Enrico Milanesi, Morris Robinson as Sarastro, Stefan Konarske as Monostatos, Niamh McCormack as Sophie, Cosima Henman as Olivia, Elliot Courtiour as Paolo, Teddy Teclebrhan as Mr Baumgartner and Waldemar Kobus as Mr Suessmayr.
The Magic Flute has been directed by Florian Sigl with a screenplay by Andrew Lowery. Apart from Emerich, Fabian Wolfart and Christopher Zwickler serve as the executive producers.
