The Last of Us premiered on HBO at the beginning of the year and soon broke the viewership records. The show had the second-biggest premiere on the network, trailing only behind Game of Thrones.
Owing to its popularity, the series was renewed for a second season within two weeks of its premiere. Ever since fans have been eagerly waiting for updates on the upcoming season. Well, look no further. Here is everything you need to know about The Last of Us season 2.
The Last of Us Season 2: Potential Release Date
The official release date for the second season has not been announced by HBO yet. However, Francesca Orsi, the head of drama at HBO, did tease a potential release date in one of her interviews and revealed that The Last of Us season 2 could premiere sometime in 2025.
She also talked about if the ongoing writer’s strike will impact the show’s release timeline and said, “too early to tell.” Meanwhile, the show’s writing is paused till the strike lasts. “While everything at this moment is pencils down, I’m hopeful that we can come to terms sooner than later,” Orsi said.
She continued, “Otherwise, we will have to assess what is the end of the 24 schedule, what are the shows that are going to be delivered for 2025. At this point, those shows that I’m looking to air wouldn’t necessarily be ready if this strike last six to nine months. So yes, that’s a big question for us, but I think we’ll cross that road once we come to it.”
The number of episodes in the new season has not been revealed yet. However, it is expected to follow in the footsteps of the debut installment and feature nine episodes.
The Last of Us Season 2: Plot
The show is based on the 2013 video game of the same name. The second season will follow the events of the sequel of the game that came out in 2020. Showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that the storyline of the sequel can not be completely covered in season 2, and will ‘take more than a season to tell.’
He also explained how the story would be ‘controversial’. Mazin added, “It is a controversial story for a lot of people and all the good ones are. There’s a lot that I think that story proposes about the nature of justice that I would like to explore even more and empathy. So I thought the game was quite beautiful and very adaptable.”
The Last of Us Season 2: Cast
The show will continue to star the lead stars, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie respectively. While a number of characters died in the first season and would not appear again in the show, the surviving ones are expected to return in season 2.
The cast members who will reprise their roles include Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Additionally, Shannon Berry is rumored to be cast in the role of Abby. The show will also feature a number of new characters, including Dina, Jesse, Yara, Manny, and Lev, the casting details for which have been kept under wraps for now.
