The Imperfects, one of Netflix’s latest supernatural outings, has been scrapped by the streaming giant after just one season. The news comes only two months after the show premiered on the platform on September 8.
The Imperfects followed three young adults who undergo an experiment and get monstrous side effects. They then went on a mission to find a cure and hunt down the scientist who performed the experiment. Read on to know more about the show’s fate.
The Imperfects Cancelled by Netflix After One Season
On Tuesday, November 8, Netflix announced that The Imperfects would not be returning for a second season as they are canceling the show. The streaming platform sees a number of factors to decide the fate of the show, including the number of hours watched and the cost gone behind producing the series.
As per sources, Netflix apparently did not see enough interest among the audience for the first season, which resulted in its cancellation. The streaming giant, which has been canceling a lot of shows lately, is now under fire from the show’s fans on social media.
The First Season Received Mixed Reviews
The Imperfects premiered in September and got mixed reviews from critics. Although the show has a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its score stands at only 6.1 on IMDB, based on some 1500 reviews.
In the first week of its debut, the season ranked third on Netflix’s top 10 English titles. The viewership grew by 45% in the subsequent week, but fell by almost 64% in the third week, dropping out of the Top 10 list. Between September 8 and September 25, the show was streamed for 71.85 million hours.
Many are attributing the poor performance of the show to the bad marketing strategy followed. The show’s trailer and release date were revealed just a week before its premiere, with many audience members missing out on the details.
The Imperfects was Promoted as a ‘Coming of Rage’ Story
Created by Shelley Eriksen and Dennis Heaton, The Imperfects followed the story of three Seattle-based twenty-somethings: Abbi, a scientist; Tilda, a singer and Juan, a comic book artist. The three undergo experimental gene therapy and accidentally turn into monsters.
The trio then decides to find and hunt down Dr. Alex Sarkov, the scientist responsible for their transformation, in an endeavor to turn to their human selves again. In their mission, they are joined by scientist Dr. Sydney Burke.
The 10-episode season 1 was green-lit by Netflix in April 2021, with Nomadic Pictures producing the series. The show starred Italia Ricci as Dr. Sydney Burke, Morgan Taylor Campbell as Tilda Weber, Rhianna Jagpal as Abbi Singh, Iñaki Godoy as Juan Ruiz, Kyra Zagorsky as Isabel Finch and Jedidiah Goodacre as P.J.
They were joined by Rhys Nicholson as Dr. Alex Sarkov and Dr. Hallenbeck, Celina Martin as Hannah Moore, Junnicia Lagoutin as Darcy Cobourg, Ron Selmour as Jim Sponson, Rekha Sharma as Dr. Dominique Crain, Max Lloyd-Jones as Doug and John Cassini as Dr. Brian Yake.
