The Great is an anti-historical comedy-drama series that follows the rise to power of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia. The series is loosely based on the life of Catherine, who was crowned empress in 1762 after her husband Peter III died unexpectedly.
The series takes place in a fictionalized version of 18th-century Russia and follows a young woman named Elizaveta Petrovna (who is based on Catherine) as she rises from being a commoner to becoming one of the most powerful women in all of Europe.
