ABC’s hit family comedy The Goldbergs is coming to an end after 10 seasons. The network has confirmed that the show will conclude with the ongoing season 10 finale episode, which will serve as the series finale.
The Goldbergs, created by Adam F. Goldberg, is a semi-biographical drama based on the creator’s life and follows the life of his Jewish family in the 1980s. The series is the longest-running scripted comedy on ABC.
The Goldbergs to End After 10 Seasons
ABC confirmed the development with a special farewell video by the cast. Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, expressed his thoughts on the show’s conclusion and said, “We are so proud of the 10 years we were able to spend with The Goldbergs.”
“This is an incredible team and we’re so thankful for the joy and entertainment they brought to so many over this time. We look forward to celebrating their final chapter along with the fans in the weeks ahead,” Erwich continued.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, who stars as the matriarch Beverly Goldberg, also released a statement: “It’s been an honor to be part of ‘The Goldbergs’ for the last decade. I’m really proud of what we accomplished with the show, and I’m so lucky to have had such a rewarding experience. I will miss my TV family and every last crew member.”
She added, “Thanks to our brilliant writers for giving us thoughtful story arcs year after year, and for being so collaborative. Thanks to the best EPs in the business. And thanks to all our fans (the Goldnerds) for being so sweet and supportive. My heart is full…But I definitely hope I never see another pair of shoulder pads for the rest of my life.”
The Series had been Facing Troubles for the Last Few Years
While The Goldbergs got immense love from the audience in the initial few seasons, the linear ratings have decreased gradually in the last few seasons, which is the main reason behind its conclusion. Also, the series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, so ABC has limited ownership.
Add to that the pricey licensing fees, which made the show’s continuation even more difficult. There have been changes in the cast as well. George Segal, who played Albert “Pops” Solomon, unfortunately, passed away in 2021. The same year, Jeff Garlin, who starred as Murray Moshe Goldberg, was fired from the show after multiple HR complaints.
Moreover, original creator Adam F. Goldberg left the project a few years ago after his deal with Sony ended in pursuit of better opportunities at Disney. With a lack of source material and Goldberg’s home videos, the show lost its feel and could not connect with the audience as it did before.
The Goldbergs also stars Sean Giambrone as Adam Frederick Goldberg, Troy Gentile as Barry Norman Goldberg, Hayley Orrantia as Erica Dorothy Goldberg, Sam Lerner as Geoff “Madman” Schwartz, AJ Michalka as Lainey Lewis, Judd Hirsch as Ben “Pop Pop” Goldberg, and Dan Fogler as Marvin Goldberg.
The Goldbergs season 10 is currently being aired on ABC, with new episodes every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The series finale is set to air on May 3.
