The Diplomat, a new political thriller series premiered on Netflix on April 20th. The show revolves around Kate Wyler, the new U.S. Ambassador to the UK, who has ‘to defuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London’ while also facing troubles in her marriage.
The series features some exotic and high-profile locations in the UK. Audiences are now wondering if The Diplomat was actually shot at real locations in London or if sets were created in a studio. Read on to find out.
The Diplomat Filming Locations
The Diplomat was shot in real locations in the UK and France. The shooting commences in April 2022 and concluded by the end of the year. Here are all the locations where the Netflix series was filmed:
London, England
The majority of the sequences of the show were shot in London. The production crew set up their camps in different neighborhoods of the capital to capture the essence of the city, where the premise of the show is set. The cast was seen filming some important scenes on King Charles Street and around Wrotham Park.
Winfield House, the official residence of the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, can also be spotted in The Diplomat. However, lead star Keri Russell revealed that the production did not take place at the residence, but at a similar-looking house. “We actually shot at a house outside of London that is very similar,” said Russell.
London has previously served as a filming location for a number of productions, including Sense8, Elementary, Black Mirror, Ted Lasso, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Andor, The Crown, Doctor Who, and Bridgerton.
Cotswolds, England
The cast and crew of The Diplomat were also seen filming some key scenes in the Cotswolds, a region in central-southwest England. The region is famous for its scenic landscape, including hills and valleys. It mostly comprises rural areas with stone-built villages, towns, and homes.
Cotswolds earlier featured in the Harry Potter series, War Horse, The Remains of the Day, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Holiday, and Stardust. Many television shows were also shot here, including Downton Abbey, Poldark, Father Brown, Midsomer Murders, and The Great British Bake Off.
Île-de-France, France
Some sequences for the show were also shot in Île-de-France. It is the most populous region in France and also houses the capital, Paris. The cast and crew of The Diplomat were mainly seen in and around the capital city and shot a couple of scenes at the iconic Louvre Museum.
Île-de-France is known for its lush green forests and farms, while Paris is known as the fashion capital of the world. The city is also home to the Eiffel Tower and Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral, along with cultural centers and chic cafés.
Films including Black Box, The King’s Daughter, Night Shift, Inception, The Bourne Identity, and Midnight in Paris as well as the television shows The Collection, Emily in Paris, Jack Ryan, The Queen’s Gambit, Sense8, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon have also been shot in Île-de-France.
