Texas University Introduces Course On Taylor Swift’s Songwriting

Taylor Swift just took being a celebrity to the next stage! Texas University is offering an exclusive subject in a literature course on her!!

Texas University is offering a subject on Swift’s songwriting skills as one of the subjects to be taught in the new literature course.

The subject which will be called “Literary Contests and Contexts: The Taylor Swift Songbook,” will be taught by Dr. Elizabeth Scala. Dr. Scala got introduced to Swift’s songs through her daughter.

She said, “Swift is an intelligent and talented songwriter, and her writing skills are what made me focus on her.”

She further added that “I want to take what Swift fans can already do at a sophisticated level, tease it out for them a bit with a different vocabulary, and then show them how, in fact, Swift draws on richer literary traditions in her songwriting.”

The students will not only learn about the 11-time Grammy winner’s songwriting but also use “the songwriting of pop music icon Taylor Swift to introduce literary critical reading and research methods-basic skills for work in English literature and other humanities disciplines.”

The preliminary texts will include her album Red (Swift’s version), Lover, Folklore, and Evermore. Her work will be read along with the greats like Coleridge, Shakespeare, Chaucer, etc.

NYU’s Honorary Degree And Course On Swift

It turns out that Texas University is not the first one to make a course on Taylor Swift! The prestigious New York University’s Clive Davis Institute rolled out a course on Taylor Swift, taught by Brittany Spanos.

A representative mentioned that the course included the “evolution as a creative music entrepreneur, the legacy of pop and country songwriters, discourses of youth and girlhood, and the politics of race in contemporary popular music.”

It turns out that the course had a long waitlist. The University also went on to grant Swift an honorary doctorate degree in fine arts, she also delivered the commencement speech at the 2022 graduation ceremony.

Swift went on to mention how she never got to experience college and that she dropped out after 10th grade so that she could pursue music full-time.

She also cracked jokes at herself and said “I’d like to thank NYU for making me technically, on paper at least, a doctor.”

The Love Story singer also added, “Not the type of doctor you would want around in the case of an emergency, unless your specific emergency, was that you desperately needed to hear a song with a catchy hook and an intensely cathartic bridge section.”

She concluded her speech with some words of inspiration, which included “never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth.” Some other words that resonated with the graduates were “I have some good news: it’s totally up to you. I also have some terrifying news: it’s totally up to you.”

Only time will tell whether or not the course is a good step forward. However, with how music is changing the world we live in, it was only a matter of time before it became a course in schools and colleges. It is possible that other singers and celebrities also become subjects in near future.
