Sam Smith Racy New Music Video Sparks Fierce Debate On Social Media

English singer-songwriter, Sam Smith’s racy music video has sparked a fierce debate on social media. In the latest Calvin Harris-produced single, “I’m Not Here To Make Friends”, Sam’s racist getup is being trolled by those, whom Sam’s fans are calling homophobic. The critics, however, find the video “monstrous” and “degrading”.

What’s In Sam’s New Video?

Engish singer Sam Smith, who is a non-binary, donned a corset and nipple pasties in their new single, I’m Not Here To Make Friends. It’s the latest single from Sam’s fourth studio album Gloria, and has sparked a massive debate on social media.

Due to their bold look, many came forward and called the Calvin Harris-produced music video “monstrous” and degrading”. One person accused the singer of “wearing their sexuality like a costume and shoving it in everyone’s face”. However, some came to Sam’s defense and stated that the hate stems from homophobia and fatphobia.

Sam’s latest studio album, “Gloria” was released on Jan. 27, 2023, through Capitol Records. It’s their first album since “Love Goes”, which was released in 2020. Upon release, the album received generally favourable reviews from music critics. On the other hand, I’m Not Here To Make Friends got Sam into trouble.

What Do Sam’s Supporters Feel?

Sam Smith’s latest album, “Gloria” is making a lot of buzz in the music industry, and has already gained favourable comments from music critics. Rolling Stone called Gloria Smith’s “deepest album yet” and described it as “a compact, steadily flowing collection of pop songs that showcase Smith’s vocal versatility and personal growth”.

Rolling Stones further noted that the lyrics describe “Smith’s experiences as a queer person who was raised Catholic” throughout. However, “I’m Not Here To Make Friends” continues to spark online debate, where critics have trilled them badly. But again, Sam’s got a fair share of supporters.

One of the supporters tweeted, “Sam Smith is out there producing the most creative and authentic work of their career. If you’re remotely offended by it, you should ask what that says about you, not about them as an artist and person.” Another wrote, “It wasn’t Britney’s job to parent your kids 20 years ago, and it isn’t Sam Smith’s job now”.

An LGBTQ+ member commented, “The backlash against Sam Smith is absolutely about people not wanting people to be overtly sexual unless they’re skinny.” Another wrote, “If Sam Smith were thin, cis, and straight, they wouldn’t be ridiculed for how they present and dress. If Harry Styles wore the same fits on a magazine cover, y’all would be screaming YAS QUEEN. Anyway, support fat queer people.”

It goes without saying that Sam Smith is one of the most talented artists out there. Their accolades include four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, and an American Music Award, as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

Sam has been very vocal about their sexuality. In 2014, they came out as gay while in 2017, they revealed that they are genderqueer, stating: “I feel just as much a woman as I am a man”  and speaking of a period in their youth where they “didn’t own a piece of male clothing and would wear full makeup while attending school”.

In 2019, Sam decided to come out as non-binary and since then, they prefer to be called they/them. “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…, Sam revealed back then. As for the present music video, what are your thoughts?
