Bollywood actress Radhika Apte has bagged a lead role in an unnamed international film co-starring Stana Katic from “Castle” and Megan Thomas from “Equity.” The trio of women head this World War II spy drama. The film is based on real-life spies who were Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive agents.
Katic plays British intelligence officer Vera Atkins, who sends Virginia Hall and Noor Inayat Khan, played by Thomas and Apte, respectively, to France as spies during World War II. Vera is a crafty recruiter, with deep secrets, and Virginia is an American spy with a wooden leg. Virginia was the first female field agent, and a fierce one at that considering the Nazi’s dubbed Virginia as “the most dangerous of all.” Noor is a pioneer in British history as the first Muslim war heroine. The pacifist was half Indian and half American and she as the first female wireless operator. The three women form a special bond while tangled up in this war.
Actors Linus Roache and Rossif Sutherland have also been cast as important characters in the film. This historical action film has an intriguing storyline and is totally female-driven both on and off screen. Thomas is not only one of the lead actresses but she actually wrote the original screenplay as well. She has done extensive research on each of these phenomenal women to be as historically accurate as possible. Thomas has even consulted experts from the British Military Intelligence museum and researched the archives of the Imperial War Museum.
The multi-talented woman she is, Thomas is also the producer of the film along with Lydia Dean Pilcher. Pilcher, a long-time friend of the internationally acclaimed director Mira Nair, is also directing this unnamed spy drama. Pilcher is excited to work with Apte and the other leading ladies on this exciting new project.
Interesting side note, this film won’t be the first time the exceptional work of Noor Inayat Khan is brought to life. Writer Shrabani Basu wrote a book on the life of Khan titled Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan. In case you didn’t know, Basu is also the woman who discovered the unlikely friendship of Queen Victoria and her confidant Abdul Karim which sparked her book Victoria and Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant and the award-winning film “Victoria and Abdul.”
Aside from this new project, Apte is set to star opposite the adorable Dev Patel in Michael Winterbottom’s next feature, “The Wedding Guest.”
