International actress Priyanka Chopra is under fire from Indian fans for a recent plot twist on ABC’s “Quantico.”

Chopra’s character, FBI agent Alex Parrish, thwarts the plans of Indian nationalists planning a nuclear attack in Manhattan. The terrorist group had plans to frame Pakistan for the attack held days before a summit regarding Kashmir. Kashmir is the Himalayan territory that has been in a custody battle between Pakistan and India for years.

On the show, Parrish was able to stop the terrorists by recognizing the Hindu symbol of Rudraksha on the chain of one of the men. The episode titled “The Blood of Romeo” has caused quite a stir after it was aired in India on June 1.

Many Indians are upset about the portrayal of Indians as terrorists regarding the sensitive topic of Kashmir. This episode is on the heels of India’s efforts to distance itself from extremist Hindu organizations that have have been known to commit acts of violence, often against India’s Muslim population. With the current political issues occurring in India, Indians have been targeting Chopra on social media, blaming her for the plot when in reality, Chopra has no control over the storyline or casting of the show.

ABC Studios released a statement defending Chopra and released an apology for those offended by the “Quantico” episode.

“ABC Studios and the executive producers of ‘Quantico’ would like to extend an apology to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, ‘The Blood of Romeo.’ The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn’t create the show, nor does she write or direct it,” ABC’s statement said. “She has no involvement in the casting of the show or the storylines depicted in the series. ‘Quantico’ is a work of fiction. The show has featured antagonists of many different ethnicities and backgrounds, but in this case, we inadvertently and regrettably stepped into a complex political issue. It was certainly not our intention to offend anyone.”

Chopra is one of the only actors to successfully cross over from Bollywood to Hollywood. Being a global icon, Chopra is seen as a representative of India on an international platform. Her actions on and off the screen are inspected under a microscope and it can’t be easy. This episode isn’t the first time Chopra has been targeted by Indians for her actions. She was criticized for wearing a short dress in a meeting with Modi, Indian conservatives were offended with the baring of her legs.

She was also criticized for visiting the Rohingya refugee camps in May because she showed support for Muslims instead of opting to visit persecuted Hindus.

With “Quantico” wrapping up it’s last season, Chopra will be back in India to work on her next project, “Bharat” alongside Salman Khan.
