New Oppenheimer Trailer Showcases What Went Behind the Manhattan Project
The trailer shows Army engineer officer Leslie Groves warning Robert Oppenheimer of the potential risk of destroying the world by test-detonating the atomic bomb which was created during World War II.
“Are you saying there’s a chance that when we push that button, we destroy the world?” the engineer is seen asking, to which the physicist replies, “Chances are near zero.” Oppenheimer then reminds Groves of the stakes at hand as he says, “We’re in a race against the Nazis and I know what it means if the Nazis have a bomb.”
The trailer also showcases other important real-life characters, including Albert Einstein, Katherine Oppenheimer, Lewis Strauss, and Jean Tatlock. Oppenheimer is scheduled to release in theaters on July 21st. Watch the trailer below.
The Film is Based on the Book American Prometheus
Oppenheimer is based on the 2005 book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and chronicles the true events of the creation of the atomic bomb by exploring the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head and coordinator of the Manhattan Project.
Nolan previously revealed that Oppenheimer is one of the most challenging films he has ever worked on. “It’s a story of immense scope and scale. And one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on in terms of the scale of it, and in terms of encountering the breadth of Oppenheimer’s story,” said the acclimated filmmaker.
“There were big, logistical challenges, big practical challenges. But I had an extraordinary crew, and they really stepped up. It will be a while before we’re finished. But certainly, as I watch the results come in, and as I’m putting the film together, I’m thrilled with what my team has been able to achieve,” he added.

The film stars Cillian Murphy in the titular role. The renowned actor has previously appeared in Nolan’s Inception, Dunkirk, and The Dark Knight trilogy. Oppenheimer also features a number of other big names as historical figures, including Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.
