Another fan-favorite show is abruptly coming to an end. One of Us Is Lying, the young adult mystery series which has aired two seasons so far, has been canceled by Peacock. On Friday, it was announced that the show would not be returning for another season.
The second season finale ended with a cliffhanger, and many fans were waiting to watch how the story of the teens unfolded further. However, Peacock had other plans in store for the series.
One of Us Is Lying Canceled After Two Seasons
As per reports, Peacock executives were happy with the show, but ‘the series did not gain enough of an audience for the series to gain another season’. Universal Content Productions, the producers of the series, are now looking for another platform to continue the show.
The news of the show’s cancelation has come as a shock to many as there were still a lot of questions left unanswered. Showrunner Erica Saleh had opened up about the plans for season 3 shortly after the second season wrapped up in October 2022.
“I definitely think that we’d have another new mystery and introduce some more evil elements at Bayview. But Fiona is Simon Says. What deeper evil is lurking underneath the surface in Bayview is something that I’m really excited to explore in Season 3,” Saleh had said, adding, “Everyone’s going to have to wait ’til Season 3 to find that out!”
The Second Season Ended with a Cliffhanger
At the end of the previous season, the Murder Club thought that they were past all the trauma and tragedies. However, a flash forward to graduation day gave a glimpse of another crime scene at the school. The ‘Stay’ necklace gifted by Nate to Bronwyn was used as a piece of evidence. This now marks the end of the series, at least on Peacock.
The news comes at a time when the streaming platform is making several changes to its programming lineup. Along with One of Us is Lying, another hit teen drama, Vampire Academy, has also been canceled. Meanwhile, the platform has also ordered a number of new shows and is said to be developing the next phase of its content.
One of Us Is Lying was Based on a Novel
The show is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Karen M. McManus. The series premiered its eight-episode first season in October 2021, followed by the second season a year later.
The official synopsis of the show read, “At Bayview High, five students – Simon, Addy, Cooper, Bronwyn, and Nate – are given detention. Simon, known for starting an online gossip group with his friend Janae to snitch on his classmates, suffers a sudden and fatal allergic reaction.”
“Each of the four students had a motive to kill Simon, and after it is determined his death was not an accident, an investigation ensues,” it read further. The star cast included Annalisa Cochrane, Chibuikem Uche, Marianly Tejada, Cooper van Grootel, Barrett Carnahan, Jessica McLeod, Melissa Collazo, Sara Thompson, and Alimi Ballard.
One of Us Is Lying seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Peacock. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
