Another crown for the rap queen! Nicki Minaj will be honored with the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. Minaj will be the fourth rapper to receive the award after Beastie Boys (1998), LL Cool J (1997), Kanye West (2015) and Missy Elliott (2019).
The awards, which were canceled in the last two years because of the pandemic, will be returning this year on August 28. Read on to know the complete details of Nicki’s big win.
Nicki is also Nominated for ‘Best Hip Hop’ at VMA 2022
Apart from being awarded the coveted honor at the event, Nicki has also been nominated for best hip-hop for Do We Have a Problem featuring Lil Baby. She will also be seen setting the stage on fire with her performance. This will be the singer’s first performance at the awards since 2018.
Talking about the 39 year old singer winning the Video Vanguard Award, Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming & events, Paramount said in a statement, “Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry.”
“She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’,” added Gillmer, who is also the chief content officer, of music at Paramount+.
Nicki is a Five Time VMA Winner
Minaj has been nominated for VMA 17 times and has won the award five times. She won her first VMA, for best hip-hop video for Super Bass in 2011. She went on to win awards in the same category in 2015 for Anaconda and 2018 for Chun-Li.
In 2012, she won the award for best female video for Starships, and in 2015, she ended up lifting the trophy for best power anthem for Hot Girl Summer, which also featured Ty Dolla Sign.
Nicki made her VMA debut on the pre-show in 2010 when she and will.i.am performed their hit track Check It Out. In 2012, she debuted at the main event, rapping a surprise verse on Alicia Keys’ Girl on Fire.
This year’s VMA will be aired live from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on August 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello x Khalid, and Panic! At The Disco have been announced as the first set of performers at the event.
Minaj has been going through a Tough Phase Personally
The happy news has come at a time when Nicki is going through a tough phase in her personal life. She lost her father last year in a hit-and-run accident, the convict of which has been sentenced to only one year in prison recently.
In July this year, the rapper’s husband, Kenneth Petty, was sentenced to three years of probation and one year of home detention for failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California. He has been convicted of attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1995. Minaj and Petty have a 2-year-old son together.
