Ryan Gosling fans can rejoice as his recently released film The Gray Man is getting a sequel. Netflix has officially announced The Gray Man 2 with Gosling returning as Sierra Six.
The spy film which opened in select theatres on July 15 and premiered on Netflix a week later on July 22, has been trending worldwide on the streaming platform. Though the film received mixed reviews from critics, the audience’s reaction has made the sequel possible. Read on to know more about the second part of the franchise.
Russo Brothers Confirm The Gray Man Sequel
It is reported that not only a sequel, but a spin-off project is also in the works. The directors of the film, Russo Brothers announced the plan for a second part. They said, “The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film.”
They added, “With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”
Scott Stuber, Head of Global Films at Netflix also talked about the sequel and said, “With The Gray Man, the Russos delivered an edge-of-your-seat spectacle that audiences around the world are loving. We’re excited to continue to partner with them and the team at AGBO as they build out The Gray Man universe.”
The Gray Man 2 Release Date and Cast
Although the project has been announced, its release date has not been revealed yet. As the film is at the pre-production stage currently, speculations can also not be made about the premiere date.
As for the cast, Ryan Gosling has been confirmed to return as Sierra Six, while there is no information on whether Chris Evans will return as Lloyd Hansen. The future of other cast members like Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, and Julia Butters is also not clear yet.
Like the first part, the sequel will also be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo who are famous for making the Avengers films. The film will be written by Stephen McFeely, and produced jointly by the Russo Brothers, AGBO and Roth Kirschenbaum Films.
The Gray Man is the Most Expensive Netflix Film to Date
Estimated to be made at a budget of $200 million, The Gray Man is said to be the most expensive Netflix film to date. The film became highly successful with the international audiences ever since its debut.
The film is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. It revolved around a CIA assassin who is on the run after discovering incriminating secrets about the agency. Till now, 11 novels have been published in The Gray Man series, so there was always a possibility for a sequel. The first film’s ending also left scope for the story to be taken forward in future films.
