While most details have been kept under wraps, Nia released a statement about the highly-anticipated third film from the popular franchise. “The sweet friendship which bloomed from the producers’ first taking a chance on me then grew into a beautiful relationship as they entrusted me to direct this instalment of our franchise.

“We filmed our family reunion entirely in Greece which was thrilling for us all. Plus, we ate for free,” she concluded. While much has been kept a secret, the third part sees the characters departing Chicago for a trip to Greece, a vacation that will end in another big Greek wedding.

The studio hasn’t released an official description of what the movie will entail, but it definitely shared previous faces along with some new ones. While Nia (also the director) returns to the third part of the rom-com trilogy, other stars include, John Corbett, Elena Kamopouris, Louis Mandylor, Maria Vacratsis, Gia Carides, Andrea Martin, and Joey Fatone.

Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Rita Wilson are returning from the first two films as producers, while Steven Shareshian, Scott Niemeyer and Paul Brooks serve as executive producers. The film will be released by Focus Features in the U.S. and distributed internationally by Universal Pictures.

“It’s thrilling to have Nia Vardalos, Academy Award-nominated writer, not only in front of the camera as our star but also behind the camera as our director, guiding our beloved cast for this third film shot on location in Greece,” Rita Wilson said in a statement. “‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ has brought audiences joy for twenty-one years. I’m so happy that more joy is on the way.”

Those who have seen the previous films need no introduction to the original “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, which was a massive hit since its release in 2002. The movie grossed $368.7 million against a $5 million budget. The story revolved around a traditional woman from Greece who ends up falling in love with a non-Greek. That’s where the crazy adventure began. A spin-off series, “My Big Fat Greek Life” was also released on CBS in 2003.

Nia was applauded for her writing and her ability to make a fool of herself yet retain the sincerity of her audience. FYI, the original film’s screenplay was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 2003 Academy Award. As for the second part, the movie garnered a modest reception but still remained a financial success. The wait is over because the biggest Greek wedding clan of this fall season is set to hit theatres on Sept. 8, 2023!
