The names of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards winners have been announced! This year, the annual award show was expected to take place as an in-person award ceremony at the Barker Hangar on May 7, 2023, Sunday but a virtual ceremony was held due to the ongoing writers’ strike.

Not long ago, the Hollywood actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore stepped down from hosting the award show because of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Originally, the awards were supposed to air live on Sunday, however, things changed due to the strike and a pretaped special was aired for the fans as many attendees backed out of the show.

So what are you waiting for? Continue reading further to learn the names of the movies and television shows who managed to win big at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Which film won the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Award for best movie?

Horror film Scream VI bagged the top honor at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night. In addition to this, Courteney Cox who played the role of Gale Weathers and the killer Ghostface won the award for best fight. The latter accepted both awards via pretaped video speeches.

While receiving the award for the best movie, Ghostface joked that there is finally an answer to the question, “What is your favorite scary movie?” which is a reference to an iconic line from the famous franchise.

On the other hand, when we talk about television, the show The Last of Us was named best TV show at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Along with this, the show also picked up two more trophies: best hero for Pedro Pascal and best duo for him and Bella Ramsey.

Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, and Charlie Heaton amongst many others nabbed two awards.

This year, the MTV Movie & TV Awards added two new categories and they are as follows: best reality onscreen team and best kick-ass cast.

Jennifer Coolidge who essays the role of Tanya McQuoid in the HBO’s show The White Lotus nabbed the award for most frightened performance. She was also honored with Comedic Genius Award. She accepted her award through a pretaped speech.

In her speech, the Hollywood actress said, “Thank you, MTV. Thank you for honoring me with this incredible Comedic Genius Award. Wow. Wow.” She also shared her support for the writers who are “fighting for the rights of artists everywhere.”

Coolidge added, “Almost all great comedy starts with great writers and I just think that, you know, as a proud member of [SAG-AFTRA], I stand here before you tonight, side by side with my sisters and brothers from the WGA that are fighting right now, fighting for the rights of artists everywhere.”

She went on to say, “I think of the words of Shakespeare where he once said, ‘The play is the thing.’ Well, I don’t wanna put words in his mouth or anything, but I think what he really meant was, it’s everything.”

Why did Drew Barrymore pull out of hosting the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards?

Drew Barrymore backed out as a host of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards just three days before the award show. She made the big decision in a show of support and solidarity with members of the Writers Guild of America.

In a statement issued, Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards said, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.”
