Metallica lead vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield has decided to end his 25 year old marriage! As per reports, the musician has filed for divorce from his wife, Francesca Hetfield.
The divorce documents were filed in a court in Colorado, the couple’s home state, earlier this year. The two made no public announcement of their separation and were able to keep things private. Read on to know more about the couple’s relationship and divorce.
James and Francesca are on Talking Terms
James and Francesca are said to be in touch as they have to co-parent their kids. The duo met in 1992 when Francesca worked as a costumier for Metallica. They fell in love and got married on August 17, 1997. Just like the divorce, their wedding ceremony was also a quiet affair.
They have three children together, a 20 year old daughter, Cali; a 16 year old daughter, Marcella; and an 18 year old son Castor. This was the couple’s first marriage. Francesca used to join James on his tours. They also went on family vacations frequently.
Before meeting Francesca, James had been in a number of relationships and is said to have dated Kristen, Leah Storkson, Marlo Broaddus and Teresa Haynes.
The Musician had Credited his Wife for Helping him through Difficult Times
James, who has battled alcohol addiction for a long time, credited his wife for helping him through the dark phase of his life. Talking about one of his rehab stints in the early 2000s, the 59 year old singer said, “My wife did the right thing, she kicked my ass right out of the house, and that scared the shit out of me.”
He added, “She said, ‘Hey, you’re not just going to the therapist now and talking about this, you’ve got to go somewhere and sort this shit out,’ so that’s what I did.”
“What worked for me was seven weeks someplace, like basically tearing you down to bones, ripping your life apart, anything you thought about yourself or what it was, anything you thought you had, your family, your career, anything, gone. Strip you down to just; you’re born. Here’s how you were when you were born, you were okay, you were a good person, let’s get back to that again, then they slowly rebuild you,” he further said.
James had a Relapse in 2019
James became sober after going to rehab in the early 2000s. However, the Nothing Else Matters artist had a relapse in 2019 and had to enter a treatment program for addiction.
As a result, Metallica had to postpone their planned tour of Australia and New Zealand at the time. Since then, he has been keeping well and rejoining the band. Metallica will be performing next at a concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 14.
It has also been recently announced that the heavy metal band will be a part of the lineup at the Global Citizen Festival on September 24th in New York City’s Central Park.
