Soon after, the models were joined by the victims of the war in the music video, who they started beating as blood spewed onto the runway. The audience watching the fashion show laughed as the violence continued. Their laughter went on even as bloodied bodies were being dragged across the stage without their limbs.
Then, the photos of the real war victims started appearing on the screen before Madonna burst from backstage in a tank eventually killing the snooty-looking fashion-goers with a grenade. In the music video, we can see the members of the army beating the war victims.
Back in the day, the music video of the song American Life was supposed to be a commentary on the then-ongoing American invasion of Iraq. She mixed haute-couture with the brutality of the war.
Then, the Like a Virgin singer faced immense backlash even before the music video aired. At that time, Madonna decided to release a highly censored version of the American Life instead.

Then, the American singer-songwriter stated the original version of the song “was filmed before the war started” and didn’t think it would be “appropriate to air” — despite already airing abroad.
The Back That Up To That Beat singer said, “Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity and respect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the meaning of this video.”
