Lil Nas Offends Trans Community, Issues Aplogy After Joking About “Transition-Surgery”

Lil Nas def handled a situation and ended up offending his own community. The “Old Town Road” artist, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, crossed a few lines after he cracked a “not so cool” joke about his transition surgery. As a result, Lil Nas had to tweet an apology to the trans community for def handling the situation in anger instead of “considering why it’s not cool”. Here’s what exactly happened.

What Did Lil Nas Do To Trigger Backlash?

Lil Nas, whose real name is Monero Lamar Hill, has issued a quick mea culpa for offending the trans community after he cracked a “not so funny” joke about transition surgery. On Tuesday (March. 14), the “Old Town Road” rapper shared a photo of a woman resembling him, with a caption: “The surgery was a success.”

Not only this but the rapper engaged with some commentary via snark and admitted that he was angry. One follower asked him why he had to mention surgery? He responded, “Because [the woman photographed] has titties? Are you dense?”

Since then, the trans community has displayed anger and many found his comments offending. However, the rapper didn’t issue an immediate apology, instead clapped back in a now-deleted tweet:  “I’m literally just saying she looks like me, y’all cannot be f—in serious.” One quote response to Lil Nas X’s tweet read, “you’re a gay cis male why are you making transitioning a punchline of a joke.”

How Are Fans Reacting To The Apology?

After the incident, Lil Nas finally came forward with an apology and wrote: “Apologies to the trans community. I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. Much love to you guys. Sorry.” While many fans thought he didn’t have anything to be sorry about, most felt that the apology wasn’t enough.

A Black trans artist tweeted, “Baby, this apology ain’t it! You need to apologize to the trans community in material ways that include money, and sharing your platform to raise awareness … This is fake as hell!” In retaliation, Lil Nas X then quoted her tweet, writing, “girl eat my ass.”

Lil Nas’s fans, however, came to his defense on the trans artist’s tweet. One wrote, “hi trans person here! there wasn’t even anything 2 apologise for to begin w some of y’all must be a little too soft or something.” One mentioned, “No it is never fake to give material apologies to marginalized communities that you are using when you’re a right celebrity.”

Another wrote, “But just throwing money at the situation wouldn’t be fake? If anything that would be worse. He already apologized and has always advocated for trans rights. He literally dedicated his album to them.” Lil Nas X’s comments came shortly before Transgender Day of Visibility, which honours the community annually on March 31.
