World renown, Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio is in final negotiation talks to portray the character of controversial religious cult leader Jim Jones in a project picked up by MGM film and written by Scott Rosenberg.
Jim Jones was the cult religious leader of the Peoples Temple religious group that was founded in the year 1955 in Indianapolis. He was the mastermind behind the mass suicide at his Jonestown settlement in November 1978.
More than 900 people died in the incident including 304 children. Jones and his close associates have planned a mass massacre at the jungle commune in Guyana, asking their followers to drink cyanide-adulterated punch.

Jim Jones was praised by his followers for his Aura and used to blindly believe in his alleged faith healing abilities. Jones was ridiculed for being paranoid and used to abuse some of his followers. His life story has inspired people to write books. There are documentaries and TV specials as well about his life.
Jim openly opposed traditional Christianity and declared that he was God. In 1974, He constructed Jonestown in Guyana and encouraged his followers to live with him there. He claimed the place to be a socialist paradise free from the clutches of the U.S. government.
The US government has sent a delegation as rumors surfaced about human rights violations in Guyana. U.S. Representative Leo Ryan was heading the delegation in 1978. Jim’s followers have gunned down Ryan along with his four other Jonestown defectors.
Leonardo DiCaprio is known to portray real-life characters in many movies during his long oscar-winning career ranging from politicians (J. Edgar Hoover in J. Edgar), legendary moguls (Howard Hughes in The Aviator) to criminal forgers (Frank Abagnale Jr. in Catch Me if You Can) and corrupt stockbrokers (Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street) and many others.
MGM has bagged the project in a preemptive situation. In this new venture, DiCaprio is the producer along with Jennifer Davisson for their Appian Way production company. Writer Scott Rosenberg will get the credit as an executive producer in the project. MGM scooped up rights to the film.
Appian Way Productions company was founded almost two decades back in 2001 by DiCaprio. The company has produced many hit movies like Alejandro Inarritu’s ‘The Revenant’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, Scott Cooper’s ‘Out of the Furnace’, George Clooney’s ‘The Ides of March, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Sea of Shadows’ and many other movies.
DiCaprio will be seen in the OTT media service company, Netflix’s comedy “Don’t Look Up,” starring co-stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, and Ariana Grande. He will also star in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on AppleTV, which halted production earlier this year.
