The 2023 Met Gala, held in NYC on Monday (May 1, 2023) in New York City, was dedicated to honoring Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, the fashion visionary, who died in 2019. Kim Kardashian, who appeared in a custom pearl dress, suffered another wardrobe malfunction after coming under fire for spoiling Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress at last year’s event.
Kim Kardashian’s Spills Pearls From Her Delicate Gown
Kim Kardashian is known for wearing some of the most exquisite dresses at the Met Gala events. This year, the “SKIMS” founder dazzled the 2023 Met Gala red carpet in a custom Schiaparelli pearl dress, designed after dedicating more than 1,000 hours.
During her 10th Met Gala appearance in a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture design by the brand’s creative director Daniel Roseberry, the social media personality flaunted more than 50,000 freshwater pearls and over 16,000 crystal pearls, beaded by over a dozen artists, putting in a 1,000 hours craftwork.
As she walked into that “difficult” gown, seeking help from multiple people, Kardashian did suffer a wardrobe malfunction as the bottom of her delicate dress broke apart on the ground, spilling pearls all over. But again, the star handled the situation like a pro and continued walking with a smile.

Kim Kardashian spoke about recreating Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy in her 2023 Met Gala dress in an interview with “Vogue”. She stated, “I wanted pearls. I thought, What is more Karl? You know, the iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of. So we wanted to just be dripping in pearls.”
She also said, “This year, I just wanted to feel glamorous. I really didn’t feel the pressure. I just wanted to have a good time. I took a shot before I came with my sisters.” She mentioned that some pearls did break away, saying, “Some popped on the way, and I told my daughter to grab them all. They’re real pearls and she was putting them all in her purse.”
Kim also expressed meeting Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette, stating it was a little scary and took some time to get friendly with Lagerfeld’s beloved pet. This isn’t the first time, Kim K. has suffered a dress-damage at the Met Gala red carpet.
Last year, it was reported that Kardashian ruined Monroe’s most iconic dress. ChadMichael Morrisette, a visual artist who curates museum and costume exhibits, revealed that he observed irreparable damage to the dress.
Not only this but after walking the red carpet in the $4.8 million dress, she was slammed by the original designer of Marilyn’s dress, Bob Mackie. Bob Mackie revealed that Kim K. wearing Marilyn’s dress at the 2022 Met Gala was a “big mistake.”
If you aren’t aware, the iconic naked dress was worn by Monroe when she performed for President JFK’s birthday in 1962. She was surrounded by controversies for being the only person present on the stage and singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President”.
