James Gunn Suggests a Child-Like but Antagonistic Version of Adam Warlock for Guardians 3

James Gunn gave an update on what to expect from Adam Warlock in his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 film. Adam Warlock will be a major character in the upcoming Guardians film. Will Poulter is playing the role of the cosmic superhero in the film.

While talking to Empire, The Guardians 3 director spoke about Adam Warlock: “It’s kind of more complicated than that. But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”

Gunn’s comments are implying that Warlock will not be a good character in the major part of the film. In Marvel Comics, Adam Warlock is a member of Guardians of the Galaxy. He has a long history with Thanos and other cosmic superheroes.

Adam Warlock was first teased in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 by showing his cocoon in the Collector’s collection. But he was later mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 film’s post-credit scene. High Priestess Ayesha uttered the name of Adam in that scene.

Adam Warlock’s Future in the MCU

Marvel teased a brief look at Adam in December’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 trailer. A detailed image of Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock has come out.

James Gunn’s return to the MCU is also near the impossible as he is now leading the DC Studios with Peter Safran. But Gunn wants to set up Adam Warlock for future films when he himself will not be part of it.

In the past, he spoke on his choice of casting Will Poulter as Adam: “I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future… He could become this really important character.”

Replying to Adam’s future in the MCU, actor Will Poulter also added: “I really hope so, dude. You know, I don’t honestly know what the plan is, I mean that is, hand on heart, you know the truth.”

The live-action look of the character has many similarities to the comic book appearance. This will not be his appearance in the MCU as the actor mentioned once “go on a journey” with his gold-skinned superhero persona in the MCU.

As per reports, this film will lead to the disbanding of the current Guardians team. David Bautista has already confirmed that he will not return to his role of Drax, as this is his last appearance in the MCU.

What Kind of Role Will Adam Warlock Play in the Film?

Adam Warlock debuted in the 1967’s comics Fantastic Four #66. The origin story of Adam is quite different than the comic book version. The soul stone from the Infinity saga will possibly not be on Adam Warlock’s forehead in the MCU. It may be something else as the picture suggests.

High Evolutionary will be the primary antagonist in this film and will probably help High Priestess Ayesha to emerge Adam from his cocoon with his knowledge of mutation. Adam with his brain of a child will be manipulated to harm the Guardians.

The film will hit theatres on 5th May 2023, and fans are eager to see this core guardians team for one last time.
