Is The Idol Renewed for Season 2? Fate of the Controversial HBO Drama Explored

The Idol, a new drama premiered on HBO at the beginning of the month, and instantly made news for its raunchy scenes and twisted subject matter. However, unlike other HBO biggies like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, The Idol could not receive the expected viewership.

The first season of The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp starrer, which was initially set to feature six episodes, is now coming to an end next week after just five episodes. Audiences are now wondering about the fate of the show and if it would return for another season. Read on to find out.

Is The Idol Renewed for Season 2?

The Idol has not been officially renewed for a second season by HBO. As per reports, the network is still contemplating the fate of the series and has not made a decision about its renewal or cancellation yet.

In the middle of June, reports surfaced that The Idol will be a one-season limited series. However, a source close to HBO refuted the claims by stating, “The door is definitely still open. It’s definitely not a decision [yet]. At this point, this is normal in our process.”

Actor Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Destiny in the series, also hinted that the makers had planned for a season 2. “I see season one as setting up the world in great detail and character development, to set up a season two where it’s like, now we’re really going to get in the shit,” she said.

“When you finish a project, it’s always like, “Is there a possibility for season two? Yeah, for sure!” It’s everyone’s desire and intention to do a season two, and until we hear differently, that’s the plan,” Randolph added. However, we will have to wait for an official confirmation from HBO.

What will The Idol Season 2 be About?

The show revolves around Jocelyn, an aspiring pop star who starts a complex relationship with a self-help guru named Tedros, who turns out to be a cult leader. If the show moves forward with season 2, it will most probably focus on Jocelyn’s further involvement in the cult and how she is affected by it.

Meanwhile, the storyline has already sparked a lot of controversies and if the makers decided to listen to the audience’s feedback, they could tweak the plot a little. As for the premiere date, the first season took around one and a half years to produce.

If the show is renewed in the upcoming weeks and if the same timeline is followed, we can expect The Idol season 2 to premiere at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.

Who will Star in The Idol Season 2?

If The Idol is green-lit for season 2, it will most probably see the return of Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn. The Weeknd is also expected to return as the cult leader Terdros. Other actors who are expected to return include Rachel Sennott as Leia and Suzanna Son as Chloe.

The cast might also include Troye Sivan as Xander, Jennie Ruby Jane as Dyanne, Hank Azaria as Chaim, Moses Sumney as Izaak, Jane Adams as Nikki Katz, and Eli Roth as Andrew Finkelstein.
