A chance arrest of one of Dawson’s coworkers provides Harry and Jean with a clue, but Randall always appears to be one step ahead of them.

The story is actually described as a “tense tale of abducted scientists, brainwashing, inter-departmental rivalry, treason, and a possibly unwise romance.”
Is Spy Thriller ‘The Ipcress File’ Based On A True Story?
Long story short, no. The Ipcress File isn’t based on a true story. The story is definitely intriguing and makes us wonder whether it might be true or there might be a background of reality.
But as mentioned before, it’s not based on a true story. The Ipcress File, on the other hand, is based on Len Deighton’s initial spy novel. The title of the spy thriller is also the title of the television show ‘The Ipcress File.’
The novel was published in 1962. In 1965, the story was turned into a movie of the same name, starring Michael Caine as Harry Palmer.
The movie won a BAFTA for best British film and was named one of the British Film Institute’s 100 best films of the twentieth century in 1999.

The Novel ‘The Ipcress File’ Is Inspired By Real Life Events
Though the show is not based on a true story, the novel is inspired by real-life Cold War events. During the peak of the Cold War period, the book investigates the dangers of nuclear weaponry as well as political difficulties.
In 1992, Deighton said that the plot of The Ipcress File was inspired by his Russian neighbor, Anna Wolkoff, who escaped the post-Russian revolution and worked as a spy for Germany during WWII.
And the protagonist was classified as a “white émigré” for escaping the post-Russian Revolution. In Deighton’s novel, the protagonist is unidentified, however, he is identified as Charles later in the show.
