Is Netflix’s The Snow Girl Based on a True Story? Inspiration Behind the Mystery Series Explored

Netflix’s latest mystery thriller series, The Snow Girl, has impressed the audience with its captivating storyline. The Spanish drama premiered last week and has since made it to the top 10 list on the streaming platform in many countries.

The Snow Girl follows the disappearance of a little girl Amaya Martin during a parade. A journalist then decides to carry out an investigation to help the parents of the missing girl. Due to the disturbing events and realistic narrative portrayed in the show, many viewers are wondering if it is based on a true story. Read on to find out.

Is Netflix’s The Snow Girl Based on a True Story?

The show is not based on a true story. Instead, it is based on a book by author Javier Castillo, published in 2020. The Spanish title of the show, La Chica de Nieve, shares its name with the book. The novel won several accolades in Spain and was quickly ordered to be adapted into a show.

Moreover, the novel is also a work of fiction and does not follow any true story. Castillo revealed that he got the idea for the novel when he was once walking with his wife and young daughter, and at one point, realized that he had released the hand of his daughter.

He felt anxious and thought of the terror if anything bad ever happened to her, which served as an inspiration behind the novel. The book now has more than 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon.

There are still a few differences between the book and the Netflix adaptation. In the novel, the disappearance takes place in New York City in 1998, while the television show is set in 2010 in the city of Malaga in Spain. The name of the girl has also been changed. She was named Kiera in the book, while the series named her Amaya.

The Cavalcade of the Magi is a Real Event

While the story is fictitious, the event portrayed in the show where Amaya goes missing does take place in real life. The Cavalcade of the Magi is an annual parade that commemorates the Three Wise Men and their path to finding Jesus.

The parade is organized in several cities across Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Andorra, Gibraltar, and Poland. The event was organized for the first time in 1417 during the rule of the Medici family. Usually, it takes place on January 5 every year to mark the day before Epiphany.

As for the show, the official synopsis reads, “Malaga, 2010, Three Wise Men parade. The most magical moment of the year turns into a nightmare for the Martín family when their daughter Amaya disappears in the crowd.”

“Miren, a trainee journalist, begins an investigation parallel to that of Inspector Millán that will awaken aspects of her past that she would have liked to forget. With the help of her journalist colleague Eduardo, Miren won’t stop until she finds the girl.”

The Snow Girl stars Milena Smit as Miren Rojo, José Coronado as Eduardo, Aixa Villagrán as Belén Millán, Tristán Ulloa as David Luque, Loreto Mauleón as Ana Núñez, Raúl Prieto, Cecilia Freire, and Julián Villagrán.

All episodes of The Snow Girl are streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
