Harrison Ford’s final outing as Indiana Jones is going to be even more special as the film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is all set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year. The announcement was made by the festival on Monday.
Cannes will also pay a tribune to Ford for his long and illustrious career. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth and final installment of the world-famous franchise, which began with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival
The film will be screened at the festival on May 18th. The previous installment in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, also made it to the festival in 2008. Following the announcement, director James Mangold released a statement.
“In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film ‘Heavy’ as part of the Director’s Fortnight. Twenty-eight years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle,” he said. The Cannes Film Festival 2023 will take place from May 16th to May 27th.
Another film confirmed to premiere at the festival is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which will be screened on May 20th. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, follows a series of murders of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The full lineup for Cannes will be announced on April 13th.
The Film will Release in Theaters on June 30
Following the festival, Indiana Jones 5 will be released in theaters across the world on June 30. The film is set during the late 1960s against the backdrop of the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. 80-year-old Ford was de-aged digitally with special effects to show a younger version of him in some portions of the movie.
The official description for the film reads, “In 1969, American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones lives against the backdrop of the Space Race. Jones is uneasy over the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help beat the Soviet Union in the competition to make it to space.”
“His goddaughter, Helena Shaw, accompanies him on his journey. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller, a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program, wishes to make the world into a better place as he sees fit.”
Harrison Ford is Starring as Indiana Jones for the Last Time
The actor made an appearance at the Disney fan expo D23 in September last year and gave an emotional speech revealing that he would be portraying Indian Jones for the last time in the upcoming film.
“I am very proud to say this is fantastic,” he said, launching the trailer, adding, “This is it,” while waving his arm. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena Shaw, Mads Mikkelsen as Jürgen Voller, Antonio Banderas as Renaldo, John Rhys-Davies as Sallah, Shaunette Renée Wilson as Mason, and Toby Jones as Basil.
