House of the Dragon Episode 5 Ending Explained: Another Bloody Royal Wedding in Westeros

*Warning: House of the Dragon Episode 5 Spoilers Ahead*

Another power-packed episode of House of the Dragon is here, and the show has definitely switched gears as it reached mid-season. The episode featured a royal wedding, and if you have watched Game of Thrones, you know how weddings in Westeros make up for the most dreadful yet entertaining episodes in the series.

Well, the royal wedding of Princess Rhaenyra with Laenor Velaryon followed the tradition of the Red Wedding and the Purple wedding and ended in a bloody mess. And the episode concluded with another twist, something that was being built up from the very start of the season.

House of the Dragon Episode 5 Ending Explained: Why did Ser Criston Kill Joffrey Lonmouth?

The last part of the episode featured the royal wedding, which welcomed the lords of Westeros to the Red Keep for a lavish feast as King Viserys announced that the festivities would continue for a week and end with the wedding ceremony.

Tension soon began to build as Queen Alicent, who was missing in action, finally arrived n the middle of the King’s speech, wearing a green-colored gown, her house’s color of war, in a way announcing her arrival in the game for the throne.

Ser Laenor’s love interest, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, notices that something is off with Ser Criston Cole at the wedding and is quick to conclude that he is involved with Rhaenyra. The princess had earlier made a deal with Ser Laenor to get married and fulfill their royal duties, meanwhile staying involved with their respective partners.

Lonmouth then confronts Ser Criston and tells him that they should keep their secrets as both their interests lie with the royal couple. However, things soon turn sour as chaos surfaces during the feast, and Ser Criston ends up brutally beating and killing Ser Joffrey.

Ser Criston’s actions can be attributed to the rage that was piling up inside him. He was also furious over Rhaenyra marrying someone else while he broke his oath to be with her. He could not take out his anger on the princess and instead vented it out on Ser Joffrey Lonmouth.

Is King Viserys Dead?

As soon as Princess Rhaenyra and Ser Laenor are married, King Viserys collapses. The concerns over his health have been building up since the start of the season, with Episode 5 specifically focussing on his ailing body, with the sores on his back getting worse and the King coughing blood during the feast.

As the King collapsed, many assumed that he would be dead and the race for the Iron Throne would begin among the potential candidates. In the next episode, the show is going to have a 10-year leap, so it will be interesting to see whether the King survived or not. Meanwhile, Emma Darcy and Olivia Cooke will step into the shoes of older Rhaenyra and Alicent, respectively, after the leap.

The Exchange Between Queen Alicent and Ser Criston

Another highlight was the changed dynamic between Queen Alicent and Ser Criston Cole. As Criston is about to end his life at the godswood, Alicent arrives there to stop him. Earlier, she also pardoned him and kept his secret when he revealed to her that he did get physical with Rhaenyra.

The exchange hints that Criston might change sides as he is already angry with Rhaenyra and is now indebted to Queen Alicent. Let’s see which side he finally chooses as the season builds up and the game of thrones intensifies.

House of the Dragon airs new episodes every Sunday at 9 pm on HBO and HBO Max.
