Henry Cavill Confirms his Return as Superman in DCEU with a Special Announcement

Henry Cavill is donning the red cape again! After months of speculations and rumors around his return as Superman in the DCEU, the actor has himself confirmed that fans would get to see him in the superhero suit again.

The exciting news comes days after Cavill made a cameo in the Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam’s post-credit scene. The star’s announcement has confirmed that the sequence was not just a one-off cameo and has actually set up his future in the DCEU.

Henry Cavill Announces Return as Superman

The actor shared the news with a video on Instagram. “I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch ‘Black Adam’. But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman,” revealed Cavill.

He added that the post-credit scene in Black Adam is ‘just a very small taste of what’s to come’. Cavill finally thanked the audience and said, “Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”

Meanwhile, he captioned the post, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded. #Superman”

The Actor was Reported to have Parted Ways with Warner Bros. in 2018

Cavill had a long association with the superhero character. He was chosen to play Superman by Zack Snyder in 2010. Three years later, he made his debut as Clark Kent in Man of Steel. The actor then reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).

In 2018, after Snyder exited the DCEU, Superman was sidelined by the creators and several reports emerged suggesting that Cavill might not return as the son of Krypton again. In the 2019 film Shazam!, Superman did make an appearance, but he was shown from the neck down and was definitely not played by Cavill.

However, in the last few months, especially after the leadership overhaul at Warner Bros. Discovery, speculations were rife that the actor might return to DCEU. Cavill, himself, had maintained that he was open to play the hero again, stating in an interview that “The cape is still in the closet.”

Now that Henry has confirmed that ‘the dawn of hope is renewed’, we can surely hope for a standalone film based on Superman, almost 10 years after his previous solo outing in Man of Steel.

The Rock is to be Thanked for Cavill’s Return

Dwayne Johnson has been hyping a face-off between his Black Adam and Cavill’s Superman ever since he started promoting his film. The post-credit cameo was apparently his idea, which was rejected by former DC president Walter Hamada.

Johnson, along with his manager Dany Garcia, who also reps Cavill, then went to new executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who replaced Hamada in July this year. The new leadership gave the idea a go-ahead.

Black Adam’s team initially shot the cameo scene with Cavill’s body-double, since they were still unclear if the deal would go through. Once things were finalized, Cavill shot for the sequence in the Superman costume just last month.
