Hulu has released the trailer for Hellraiser, the reimagining of the 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker. The supernatural horror film is a reboot of the 1987 film of the same name and, overall, the eleventh film in the Hellraiser franchise.
The film revolves around an ancient puzzle box that is able to summon demons known as Cenobites, who feast on pain and torture. Continue reading to watch the trailer and know the release date of the film.
Hellraiser Trailer Promises Some Spine Chilling Moments in the Film
The trailer begins with a mysterious man convincing a young boy to continue solving a puzzle box to earn his prize. As soon as the box opens, it sucks the boy’s blood and unleashes Cenobites from their dimension.
A woman is then shown struggling with her addiction and is concentrating toward the box. A glimpse also shows some notes written explaining each turn and pattern of the puzzle box, which possibly means that the story will also be focused on the functioning of the box that summons the Cenobites.
Pinhead then finally makes an appearance and says, “It’s time,” as he is joined by other cenobites who are about to torture a captured man. The film is scheduled to premiere on Hulu on October 7. Before that, it will have its world premiere at the Beyond Fest in Santa Monica, California, on October 4. Watch the spooky trailer below.
The Reboot Revolves Around a Young Woman Possessing the Puzzle Box
The official synopsis of the film reads, “A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.”
Talking about the project, director David Bruckner said, “It’s the tale of a young woman, who’s struggling with addiction and compulsive behaviour, that comes in contact accidentally with the box and unfortunately begins to dabble with it. And chaos ensues.”
About the challenges he faced in making the film, Bruckner added, “Hellraiser is a unique challenge, I think, for a group of filmmakers because, you know, it could be a guy in a mask, but it’s not; it’s inter-dimensional demons that shoot chains at you from an endless labyrinth. It’s complicated and not just conceptually but also logistically.”
Hellraiser stars Jamie Clayton as Pinhead
The film will feature Jamie Clayton in the role of Pinhead. Elaborating on why they chose a trans woman to play the role of the Cenobite, Bruckner said, “We felt a kind of anticipation around the fans to reimagine the character.”
“We knew we wanted Pinhead to be a woman. Jamie was just the right person for the role. A person’s identity can be really exciting for a role in many ways, but I have to emphasize that Jamie absolutely killed; that’s how we got there,” he continued.
Odessa A’Zion will play the young woman in possession of the box. Other cast members include Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Jason Liles, Yinka Olorunnife, Selina Lo, Zachary Hing, Kit Clarke and Hiam Abbass.
