Hellbound is a South Korean streaming television series directed by Yeon Sang-ho, premised on his own webtoon of the same title. Yoo Ah-in, Park Jeong-min, Kim Hyun-joo, and Won Jin-ah feature in the Netflix original series about supernatural angels emerging out of nowhere to sentence individuals to hell. Netflix announced in April 2020 that it would produce an original series based on Yeon Sang-ho’s webtoon Hellbound.
The series will be directed by Yeon itself. The first trailers and teasers for this upcoming Korean supernatural drama were unveiled at the occasion. Hellbound is certain to be a streaming platform success, but it has already made a splash as the first Korean drama to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Hellbound Release Date
On September 9, 2021, the pilot of the series premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival in the Primetime section of TV series, making it the first Korean drama to attend the festival. Hellbound will be available for streaming in 190 countries on Netflix on November 19, 2021.
The series will consist of only 6 episodes, which viewers will be able to binge-watch. On October 7, 2021, it will also be presented in the newly created ‘On Screen’ section of the 26th Busan International Film Festival. It’s also included in the ‘Thrill’ section of the 65th BFI London Film Festival. On October 15, 2021, the first three episodes of the series will be aired.
Hellbound Premise
The dark fantasy narrative of Hellbound has piqued the interest of many. The K-drama combines the notions of hell, religion, and the condemned, and is adapted on a webtoon of the same name by Yeon Sang-Ho. People in this drama are told that they will die and when it will happen. When the timer runs out, supernatural beings appear on Earth to drag people to hell.
The narrative of Hellbound also includes the emergence of a new religion known as Saejinrihwe. The religious leader describes a new phenomena in which death angels emerge from hell to proclaim God’s revelations. The religion takes momentum as the city is confronted with a new reality.
A producer for a TV network investigates the emerging religious movement, while a lawyer defends its devout adherents. A police detective is also involved in the K-drama investigations into these new angels of death.
