HBO MAX Confirms The Batman’s Spinoff “The Penguin”

After Matt Reeves’ version of “The Batman,” huge success in domestic and global theatres, another spinoff of the Batman Franchise, The Penguin is all set for production.

The Penguin aka Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, one of the greatest villains of the Batman Franchise in the D.C. Comic universe, is confirmed to receive his own moment of the spotlight with the upcoming (though limited) spinoff of Batman. On March 10, D.C. Comics as well as the online streaming platform HBO MAX announced the news on their official Twitter handles.

Head of Original Content of HBO Max, Sarah Aubrey excitedly shared the piece of news and said, “It is incredible to be working with Matt, Dylan, and Lauren on continuing this story and to see Colin take his already exceptional performance in The Batman to the next level.”

Cast and Crew members of “The Penguin”

Producer and writer Lauren LeFranc, well known for “Chuck,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” and “Impulse,” will be the writer, executive producer as well as showrunner of the upcoming series. While the limited series will be executive produced by Matt Reeves’s 6th & Idaho along with Daniel Pipski, and Adam Kassan. Dylan will produce the upcoming project via Dylan Clark Productions and Rafi Crohn is co-executive producer.

Batman’s antagonist Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Gotham crime lord Oswald Cobblepot in the HBO Max limited series “The Penguin.” The character has been previously played by Burgess Meredith (1966-68), Danny DeVito (1992), and Robin Lord Taylor (2014-19). Though Batman’s Return actor Danny DeVito is indeed one of the most iconic “Oswald Cobblepot” aka Penguin in Batman Franchise and competing against won’t be so easy.

But Farrell in his short but powerful performance portrayed a unique version of The Penguin, which saw our villain as one of the most major personalities in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. There’s still a lot to unveil about supervillain “Oz” through HBO’s upcoming series. We’re sure that the Golden Globe winner Farrell will do justice to the character of Oswald, which was introduced by the artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger in 1941.

The main cast as well as the other actors of “The Batman” might make a brief appearance in the show. The production is keeping the details regarding the rest of the characters tightly shut under the lock and key.

Possible Plot

Oswald with his top hat, monocle, and a wide variety of deadly umbrellas, is one of the most popular members of the Batman Rogues Gallery among the smarmy criminal comic book fans. The story will depict the rise to power of Penguin after his combat with Cape Crusader in film, meanwhile covering his origin and complicated past.

“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in ‘The Batman,’ and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill,” ‘Cloverfield’ director Reeves said.

The show will be focused around our antagonist and unlike his brief portrayal in “The Batman” film from an outsider’s perspective, it will encase the role of “neglected child” and his inner dark stories. Thus, the show is bound to have an R rating with a display of gore, murder, violence, drug use, and profanity.

“The Penguin” has become the first confirmed spinoff of Reeves’ version of Batman and will release in theaters next year. While in his latest interview, he also hinted us with the possible “G.C.P.D” version aka “World of Arkham” soon.
