DCU’s Wonder Woman’s solo journey has officially ended as Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios are not very keen to move forward with Wonder Woman 3.
A report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 is “dead” in the current scenario. Under new DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, the studio wants to move forward in a new and different direction. Both of them are keen on a multi-year plan to build up the DCU at a major level.
The Previous Two Films of Wonder Woman
At the very beginning, Wonder Woman was the first major hit for any of the DC superhero films. The first major superhero film which starred a strong woman superhero was first released in 2017. Back then, it did a massive business of over $822 million at the Box office.
Larger audiences expected Gal Gadot starring Wonder Woman 1984 could become a massive hit. But the plot was very similar to the first film and was proved to be a massive disaster in 2020. The film just earned $169.6 million at the Box office during the time of the Pandemic.
Wonder Woman 3 Before the Cancellation
Wonder Woman 3 is in the development stage, and Gal Gadot was set to reprise the role to play DC’s one of strongest superheroes under Jenkins’ direction.
As per a previous report from The Hollywood Reporter, the script of Wonder Woman 3 is almost complete. Jenkins was also hoping not to make the third movie the final movie. But this cancellation has surprised a lot of fans for sure.
News of Wonder Woman 3’s cancellation came just after Gal Gadot posted a heartfelt on his social media. The former Fast & Furious actress wrote: “I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character, and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU. The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.”
Wonder Woman’s third film received the green light in December 2020 under previous bosses of Warner Bros. But now, it seems like Gadot’s return as Wonder Woman is not happening soon. It is not still confirmed if DCU will introduce a new cast to play the role of the daughter of Zeus or not.
Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman
Gadot’s debut as Wonder Woman first happened in Jack Snyder’s Batman v Superman in an extended cameo role. But she received a solo film under Jenkins’ Wonder Woman film.
Gadot also appeared in both versions of Justice League. She was not very keen to work with Joss Whedon as a major fallout was revealed later with the director and the cast.
Wonder Woman 1984 was the last film where she appeared in a full-time role. But Wonder Woman last appeared in the 2021 HBO Max series Peacemaker, where Gal Gadot’s body double played the role.
A lot of other reports are coming out as well regarding DCU. Other than Wonder Woman 3, Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman’s journey may come to an end with Aquaman 2’s release in 2023. In a past interview, Momoa hinted at taking over DC’s one of the best superheroes, Lobo.
Among all these news, the most shocking report is Henry Cavill’s future is still in doubt. Cavill’s return as Superman happened in Balck Adam. That movie’s sequel is also in major doubt. Cavill is set to feature in The Flash film in a cameo role. But whether his cameo will be featured in the final cut or not is still uncertain.
