Ellen DeGeneres will be making a comeback as a host five months after her show ended. This time, however, she will be coming to YouTube rather than on TV.
Ellen DeGeneres is many things, she is a host, producer, writer, director, runs her record label, etc. She came out as a lesbian on The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was controversial yet one of the highest-rated episodes on the show.
What Went Wrong?
In 2003, she started the Ellen DeGeneres Show, which got her over 33 Emmy nominations, endless other accolades and worldwide recognition. In 2020 however, many of her employees came forward to allege a “toxic work environment”. They also claimed that DeGeneres was quite rude and distant in person, which is opposite to the image she had created for herself.
The employees also alleged facing intimidation, fear, and racism. An internal investigation was launched, over three executives left the show, and DeGeneres ended up apologizing on multiple occasions, but the damage was done.
Greyson Chance Tells His Story
Greyson Chance went viral as a sixth-grader for his rendition of the famous Lady Gaga song Paparazzi. Ellen DeGeneres got him on the show and signed him to her label. Chance came forward last month to reveal how his life and schedule would change with “one text from her.”
He claimed that she became “domineering and way too controlling”. Echoing the allegations of other people, he said that she was just “degrading to people. Chance also recalled how “She would come in and look at a rack, yell at stylists, berate people in front of me and say, ‘This is what you’re wearing on the show.’”
He also went on to mention how the studio where the show was shot became a place of trauma for him. The kid, who went on to become a singer also slammed DeGeneres for talking about his sexuality on the show.
He said “[When I came out,] I hadn’t spoken to her in years… That’s so messed up, that you’re now showing the world as if we’re so tight. We’re so good.” After 19 seasons and over almost 3000 episodes, the show came to an end.
He did also say that he was “grateful” for her and for everything that happened despite the backlash against her.
New YouTube Project
It has been five months since her two-decade-long show came to an end and Ellen DeGeneres is making a comeback. The YouTube show is called About Time For Yourself… With Ellen DeGeneres.
The show is described as “In this new series shot at her home, Ellen shares her own attempts to try new things and make a little me time in her own very Ellen way.”
In the teaser of the show, DeGeneres makes an appearance and says “I’ve been taking some time for just myself, away from the cameras, and I’ve been having such a great time, I thought I would share some of what I’ve been doing with you.”
This might be a PR attempt to make Ellen DeGeneres likable again, especially after so many people came forward to share their versions of how “manipulative” she is. Whether it works in her favor or not is yet to be seen. The YouTube show will feature 8 episodes with her learning new hobbies like bird-watching, crocheting, making cards, etc.
