Who said opposites don’t attract or react? Disney and Pixar have done it as they collaborated on a journey of the heart, mind and soul with their upcoming movie,  “Elemental”. The heart-warming romantic comedy is set to land in cinemas this summer, and its trailer speaks verses about the perfection behind its powerful plot.

The movie rests on two elements, water and fire, which form a deep connection despite not being able to touch each other. The full official trailer for Elemental was released online by Pixar on March 28, 2023. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.

“Elemental”: Release Date & Trailer

“Elemental”, an upcoming computer-animated romantic drama film by Walt Disney and Pixar, is all about fire and water. In the movie, the two elements embark on a romantic journey, keeping aside their differences, one being, not being able to touch each other.

The movie will release in United States cinemas on 16 June 2023 and would be later available to stream on Disney+. Pixar released the movie’s teaser trailer on November 17, 2022, and the full trailer was released on March 2023, 2023.

The full official trailer reveals much about the plot of the film. The main characters, Ember and Wade embark on a love journey alongside their relationship with their respective parents. Pixar has undoubtedly done a great job with the stylised animation style of the movie. A synopsis was also provided alongside the trailer:

“Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental,” an all-new original feature film that transports moviegoers to an extraordinary place called Element City, where a host of elements live and work.

The trailer showcases each element—air, earth, water and fire—and what sets them apart according to Ember, a quick-witted and fiery woman who’s always stayed close to home in Firetown. In “Elemental,” which opens in theatres on June 16, she finally ventures out of her comfort zone to explore this spectacular world born from the imaginations of Pixar’s filmmakers and specifically crafted for the big-screen experience.

“Element City is inspired by big cities around the globe and embraces theorized contributions from each elemental community—from giant pine-tree-like buildings and waterfall skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.”

Elemental: Plot and Voice Cast

The heart-warming romantic comedy tells the journey of Ember and Wade, who live in the bustling bayside city, called “Elemental City”, which is connected by bridges. In the city, many of the residents live in towering skyscrapers customised for their specific elements. And guess what? They all have a specific job to do.

For instance, the earthy beings aka the land beings grow and take care of their sprouts. On the other hand, water beings travel via a water slide. For air beings, the source of power is windmills.

However, the fire-beings live on the other side of the bridge, in low buildings, each adorned with a “chimney billowing smoke out of the small, cosy homes.” Wondering why the fire beings are separated from the rest?

The answer is simple. If they come to the other side, they’d cause chaos. Some of the reasons being, the air beings might evaporate if the two mingle, or trees and plants may get burnt. The trailer showcases how these elements interact with each other, which gives insight into the film’s possible plot. It would be incredible to see how Wade and Ember, come together despite their differences as they continue to work for the city.

The official film synopsis is as follows: The film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

Here’s all about the voice cast of the movie:

  • Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen, a fire element, described as a “tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman”.
  • Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, a water element, described as a “fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy”.
  • Ronnie del Carmen as Bernie Lumen, Ember’s bigoted father
  • Shila Ommi as Cinder Lumen, Ember’s bigoted mother
  • Mason Wertheimer as Clod, a young, street-smart earth element and Ember’s neighbour
  • Wendi McLendon-Covey as Gale, an air element, also Wade’s employer
  • Catherine O’Hara as Brook Ripple, Wade’s mother.
  • Joe Pera as Fern Grouchwood, an earth element (plays an overgrown bureaucrat)

The Disney-Pixar movie is directed by Peter Sohn, known for his work in the studio’s art department on movies like “The Incredibles” and “Finding Nemo”. He is also known for voicing characters in “Luca” and “Lightyear”. The movie’s executive producer is Peter Doctor, who wrote for “Inside Out” and “Wall-E”, and Denise Ream, known for “Cars 2” and “Toy Story 4”.

Interestingly, the upcoming movie’s screenplay is written by Brenda Hsueh, known for producing and wiring adult comedy series like “Truth Be Told” and “How I Met Your Mother”. If you don’t know this, despite its usual concept, the movie draws heavily from Peter Sohn’s own life.

The themes of identity and belonging in the movie are inspired by his upbringing as a child of Korean immigrants who moved to New York, which served as a completely different world for Peter Sohn and his parents. Are you excited about this movie?
