After finding ‘heartbreaking’ images of herself posted online in 2022, she admitted to reaching out for help and reaching out for help.
As far as the events preceding Cara’s decision to seek help were concerned, she stated, “They all happened in pretty rapid succession. That year it was my 30th, so I decided I was going to go crazy. I went to Ibiza for three weeks, went to Burning Man, to go straight back to work, and that was when pictures were taken of me.”
After an emotionally turbulent year, the model and actor is slowly beginning to find her centerâincluding by committing to sobriety. She said that she was suffering from addiction and did not want to ‘face’ everything, so she decided to turn to rehab on her own. “All I knew is if I’d continued down the road I was on, I’d either end up dead or doing something really really really stupid,” she told Vogue editor Chioma Nandi.
She explained in her interview with the magazine that when she saw the worrying images of herself for the first time, she realized that she had been lying to herself about her health.
“I hadn’t slept. I was not okay. It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point, it was like, ‘Okay, I don’t look well. But, you know, sometimes you need a reality check, so those pictures were something to be grateful for.” As she remembered them, she felt a sense of relief.
In September, Cara Sought Help From Her Closest Friends
It wasn’t until September of last year that Cara sought help from her closest friends and went into rehab. In her own words, she said: “From September, I just needed support. I needed to start reaching out. And my old friends I’ve known since I was 13, they all came over, and we started crying. They looked at me and said, ‘You deserve a chance to have joy.’”
She said she has previously relied on the quick fix of healing, such as weekly retreats, to get through a difficult time, but she has now decided to commit to a 12-step program. The COVID lockdown in 2020 triggered Cara’s struggles, as she explained she was living at the time in a bubble in LA, and she was also involved in a relationship with Ashley Benson, who is now her ex.
As a result of her split from Ashley, and the lockdowns that continued to occur, Cara came to a low point. According to her, she continued: “And then I was alone, really alone…it was a low point. I just had a complete existential crisis. All my sense of belonging, all my validation—my identity, everything—was so wrapped up in work. And when that was gone, I felt like I had no purpose. So instead of learning or doing something new, I got very wrapped up in misery, wallowing, and partying. It was a really sad time.”
