Fans were wondering if James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar will ever have a sequel or not. Well, now it’s around the corner. The anticipated return to Pandora is titled Avatar: The Way of Water and the movie is set to premiere on April 16, 2022.
The announcement of this much-awaited sequel is made by CinemaCon where the new name was revealed at the Walt Disney Studio Panel. The book Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora serves as a field guide to the fictional setting of the planet of Pandora.
Rewinding 10 Years Back
Avatar became Cameroon’s highest-grossing film of all time, earning $2.5 billion. The epic science fiction film started its developmental phase in 1994 when Cameroon wrote an 80-page treatment for the film.
The filming of Avatar was supposed to take place after Titanic but necessary technology wasn’t available to achieve his vision for the film. Work on the language of the Na’vi began in 2005, and Cameron began developing the screenplay and fictional universe in early 2006.
The plot of Avatar can be understood as the lush alien world of Pandora (planet). The Na’vi beings appear to be primitive but are highly evolved. These species are 10-foot tall (3.0 m), blue-skinned, sapient humanoids. The Na’vi beings live in harmony with nature and worship a mother goddess named Eywa.
Because the planet’s environment is poisonous, human/Na’vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar.
Colonel Miles Quaritch, head of RDA’s private security force, promises Jake that the company will restore his legs if he gathers information about the Na’vi and the clan’s gathering place, a giant tree called Hometree, which stands above the richest deposit of unobtanium in the area.
Jake finds himself falling in love with a Na’vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As the love grows between the two, he pledges to help these aliens fight for the survival of their world. It displays the greed of human beings, a problem that earth has been facing for centuries.
With the exceptions of Jake, Norm and a select few others, all humans are expelled from Pandora and sent back to Earth. Jake is permanently transferred into his avatar with the aid of the Tree of Souls.
The cast of the original movie was categorised into humans and the Na’vi beings. The inhabitants of Pandora suffered heavy casualties at the hand of human greed. Have a look at the full cast:
- Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a disabled former Marine who becomes part of the Avatar Program after his twin brother is killed.
- Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, the head of the mining operation’s security detail. Fiercely consistent in his disregard for any life not recognized as human, he has a profound disregard for Pandora’s inhabitants that is evident in both his actions and his language.
- Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, an exobiologist and head of the Avatar Program. She is also Sully’s mentor and an advocate of peaceful relations with the Na’vi.
- Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacón, a combat pilot assigned to support the Avatar Program who is sympathetic to the Na’vi.
- Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, the corporate administrator for the RDA mining operation.
- Joel David Moore as Dr. Norm Spellman, a xenoanthropologist who studies plant and animal life as part of the Avatar Program
- Dileep Rao as Dr Max Patel, a scientist who works in the Avatar Program and comes to support Jake’s rebellion against the RDA.
2. Na’vi Clan
- Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, the daughter of the leaders of the Omaticaya (the Na’vi clan central to the story). She serves as Jake’s love interest and protector of Na’vi community.
- CCH Pounder as Mo’at, the Omaticaya’s spiritual leader, Neytiri’s mother, and consort to clan leader Eytukan.
- Wes Studi as Eytukan, the Omaticaya’s clan leader and Neytiri’s father
- Laz Alonso as Tsu’tey, the finest warrior of the Omaticaya.
The sci-fi premiered in 2009 and was highly praised for its groundbreaking visual effects. Now, that Avatar 2 comes after almost a decade, imagine how the team must have levelled up the game when it comes to visual effects and storyline. I suggest you expect much more from Avatar: The Way of Water.

The filming for the Avatar sequel started in 2017. The details surrounding it have been kept under the sheets. The legendary director of Avatar and Titanic, James Cameroon did reveal a few set photos in 2020. The trailer is expected to release alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiere on May 6, 2022.
The film’s producer Jon Landau shared in an interview that the sequel will revolve around Jake and Neytiri. Now, wasn’t it predictable? Nevertheless, he revealed that the two will be travelling to the oceanic haven as the RDA mining operations threaten the planet of Pandora.
The basic plot of the film relates to new parents Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) who flee Pandora due to RDA mining operations. On the other hand, the Sullys and the Na’vi seek an oceanic haven, which turns out to be quite the opposite of what they expected.
Avatar: The Way of Water is like a “fish-out-of-water” tale depicting Jake’s new adventures on Pandora to that of the Na’vi with the Metkayini, which is the clan they meet in this new aquatic world.
Landau said, “I think the story of Avatar 2, and the strength of the story, is what Jim [Cameron] always does in any of his movies: he writes in universal themes that are bigger than any one genre.
He added, And if you think about this, there’s really no more universal theme than family. At the centre of each of our sequels is the Sully family. What are the dynamics that parents go through to protect their family?”
The Cast of Avatar 2 includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder and Matt Gerald. However, the movie will also showcase newcomers like Brendan Cowell, Michell Yeoh, Kate Winslet and Edie Falco. We will also see seven young members who will take a trip to Pandora.
