Japanese sci-fi thriller Alice in Borderland returned to Netflix with its second season on December 22. The show, based on the manga series of the same name, follows the journey of Arisu and Usagi as they are stuck in the abandoned city of Tokyo and have to compete in dangerous games to survive.
Fans who have already binge-watched the 10-episode second season are now demanding a season 3 of the show. But has Alice in Borderland been renewed by Netflix? Read on to find out.
Is Alice in Borderland Renewed for Season 3?
Netflix has not yet announced the renewal of the show for a third season. However, multiple sources have revealed that a new season is already in the works. Given the popularity of the show, the renewal of the series seems plausible for now.
Also, the streaming platform usually takes some time to announce a show’s renewal, considering the viewership and buzz. Alice in Borderland season 2 was confirmed by Netflix two weeks after the premiere of the show in 2020. If the same trend is followed, we can expect a renewal announcement in January 2023.
The release date for the next season can not be confirmed yet. Season 1 came out in December 2020, and season 2 was released in December 2022. The series requires a lot of green screen work and special effects, so it might take another two years to return. If the show is renewed in the next few weeks, season 3 is expected drop by the end of 2024.
Alice in Borderland Season 3: Potential Storyline
While Arisu and others entered the real world in the season 2 finale, the reveal of the joker card shows that the team might be far from their destination. At the end of the previous season, Arisu, Usagi, Chishiya, Aguni, Kuina, Akane, and Ann defeated all the face cards and chose not to stay as permanent residents of Borderlands.
The players sustained injuries when they entered Borderlands, and a meteor exploded over the city. They are now recovering in a hospital, with no memory of whatever happened earlier. In the end, a deck of cards is blown away by a gust of wind, but the joker card remains.
The third season, if it is green-lit, will most probably follow the Joker and his intentions in the game. The season will also likely introduce new games that could be more twisted and dangerous than the previous ones.
Who will Return in Alice in Borderland Season 3?
Kento Yamazaki as Arisu and Tao Tsuchiya as Usagi will surely be returning in the next season. Aya Asahina as Kuina, Ayaka Miyoshi as Ann, Nijirô Murakami as Chishiya, Dori Sakurada as Niragi, and Yuri Tsunematsu as Akane will also reprise their roles as their characters survived the games in the previous season.
Banda and Yaba decided to stay as permanent residents in Borderlands, so it is not yet clear whether the actors who played the roles, Hayato Isomura and Katsuya Maiguma, will be returning in the next season. Also, Kōdai Tatta died in season 2, so Yutaro Watanabe would not be coming back to the show.
