2022 BET AWARDS: Giveon Jokes BET Sabotaged his Mic, Tags Lil Nas X for his Ongoing Beef

Giveon Dezmann Evans, professionally known as Giveon, took to the 2022 BET Awards stage to serenade the audience with “Lie Again,” from his sophomore album Give or Take and much more at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 26). He also joked that BET sabotaged his mic during his performance and tagged Lil Nas X for his beef with the network.

An Unexpected Technical Issue…

The  Grammy-nominated “Take Time” artist closed the 2022 BET Awards, mesmerising the attendees with some of his fan favourites at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 26). Sporting a black studded button-down, white pants and black boots, the 27-year-old singer gave a laid-back performance with a shortened version of his Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit “Heartbreak Anniversary,” “For Tonight” and “Lie Again” with a live band.

However, Giveon seemed to have technical difficulties while singing though, forcing him to awkwardly switch microphones before singing the latter song. Following his performance at the 2022 BET Awards, he jokingly tweeted, “Not @BET sabotaging my mic.”

He also poked fun at another artist’s beef with the network, adding: “@LilNasX I get it!!!!” If you don’t know the context, LilNas is having some real problems with BET and recently stated that his anger at the BET Awards pre-dates his lack of nominations for this year’s event.

Lil Nas X’s Problems Are Real…

Giveon, whose album “Take Time was nominated at the Grammy Awards for “Best R&B album” may have joked about the technical issues at BET, but tagging  Lil Nas X in the post made a lot of sense considering the rapper’s beef with the network. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lil Nas X voiced his anger towards to network, not just for the lack of nominations for this year’s event, but also for not allowing him to perform last year.

This includes the release of his new single  ‘Late To Da Party’, last week, which opens with a chant of “fuck BET”. The rapper has been teasing the new track for weeks now and has been local about issues with BET, insisting that he is actually attempting to make a comment “about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community”.

The interview included his statement that  “My relationship with BET has been painful and strained for quite some time. It didn’t start with this year’s nominations like most people might think. They did let me perform on their show last year, but only after [I gave] assurances that I was not a satanist or devil worshiper, and that my performance would be appropriate for their audience”.

He added, “They say that ‘no one cheered louder for me than them that night. But the BET Awards team was actually very upset that I kissed my dancer on stage and vocalised their discontent with multiple members of my team immediately following the performance.”

Not only this, one unnamed member of that team added: “At some point after [Nas] got off stage, one of the BET producers came up to me and before I could even open my mouth, he looked at me and said, ‘That was really fucked up”. Another team member said:

“It didn’t feel celebratory. The response I got back was that they felt taken advantage of. It’s almost like they didn’t mind sweet kind of gay ‘Old Town Road’ Lil Nas X, but this is too much. I think BET is doubling down on what they did wrong”.

On the other hand, BET responded to the criticism by saying, “Since last year’s performance, we have been in touch to work on other projects. We are still excited about his previous performances and continue to wish him well”.

So yea, his issues are bigger and more serious than Giveon’s recent joke about the technical issue at the 2022 BET Awards and it appears that the singer sarcastically quoted Lil Nax X by saying that his mic was sabotaged at the BET. What do you think about the recent tweet?
