Sonam Kapoor made her acting debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Saawariya” in 2007 and this month marks the 10-year anniversary of the duo’s launch. Unfortunately, the film didn’t give the two star kids the magnanimous launch that was expected of them. Still so, both actors have managed to build quite the career in a 10-year span.
Sonam’s acting career has had it’s ups and downs. She has given us hits like “I Hate Luv Storys,” “Raanjhanaa,” “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo,” and the more recent female-centric film, “Neerja.” It is “Neerja” that truly portrayed Kapoor’s talents as an actress and she is being viewed in a different light. Sonam’s acting career aside, she has built an empire on social media, she is a fashion icon, a model, philanthropist, and she even has her own app so fans can always keep up with her.
Currently, she’s working with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania for a girl power-filled film titled “Veere Di Wedding.”
To celebrate 10 years of Bollywood’s most fashionable actress, here’s a look at the songs made iconic by Sonam.
1. Mashaallah from Saawariya
Though “Saawariya” didn’t do so hot at the box office, there is no denying the film was depicted stunningly in true Sanjay Leela Bhansali style. Grand sets, color schemes in shades of blue, and ornate dance numbers made this film a visual treat, too bad the storyline bored the audience.
2. Masakali from Delhi-6
The films that make the most money, aren’t always the ones with actual substance, “Delhi-6” featured two-star kids, Sonam and Abhishek Bachchan and thought it didn’t rake in the big bucks at the theaters, the critics did show this flick some love. “Masakali” and “Sasural Ghenda Phool” were at the top of the music charts when this film released.
3. Bahara from I Hate Luv Storys
The film “I Hate Luv Storys,” was full of cliches and poked fun at not only corny love stories but the ridiculousness of the Bollywood film industry. Even with its predictability, this film was, surprisingly, Sonam’s first hit film. She starred as a film set designer who was in love with the concept of love, and co-star Imran Khan was an assistant director who barfed at the thought of love- don’t they sound like they’re made for each other?
4. Remake of Dheere Dheere
In memory of Shri Gulshan Kumar, Yo Yo Honey Singh recreated the hit song “Dheere Dheere se Meri Zindagi” with Sonam and Hrithik Roshan in the video. This is actually the second time this beautiful couple starred opposite each other, the first being a music video-like commercial for Oppo Mobile. Somebody cast these two in a movie ASAP!
5. Gal Mitthi Mitthi Bol from Aisha
Sonam played a young, fashion-loving diva who thought she could cure the world’s problems with new shoes in “Aisha.” It was Bollywood’s first girl-gang film but sadly, it didn’t do too well. However, the song “Gal Mitthi Mitthi Bol” became a hit dance number for all weddings to come!
6. Saj Dhaj Ke from Mausam
The film “Mausam” starring Sonam and Shahid Kapoor really wanted to be a powerful love story that travels through a decade of very real disasters from Kashmir to 9-11. Heavy duty drama aside, Sonam was lovable as the conflicted Aayat. The good part is we have this awesome dance number from the film, who doesn’t love Shahid breaking it down in “Saj Dhaj Ke?”
7. Rabba Mein Toh Mar Gaya Oye from Mausam
“Mausam” brought us another side of Sonam, she wasn’t just a ditzy rich girl in a mini skirt in this flick. “Rabba Mein To Mar Gaya Oye” will bring you back to old school romance when you lost your heart in secret peeks and hidden smiles.
8. Tum Tak from Raanjhanaa
“Raanjhanaa” was a big break for Sonam, she showed depth with a range of emotions from love to revenge as Zoya. This story of unrequited love was touching and the song “Tum Tak” portrays Kundan’s (played by Dhanush) love for Zoya.
9. Mera Yaar from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
“Bhaag Milkha Baag” is about the journey and life of athlete Milkha Singh and though Sonam played a small role, it was enough to leave a mark with this song “Mera Yaar.”
10. Engine Ki Seeti from Khoobsurat
As Bollywood’s first Disney princess, Sonam was hilarious in “Khoobsurat” which also starred Fawad Khan. She was an eccentric character and proved her comic timing is just as perfect as her eyebrows.
11. Abhi To Party Shuru Hui Hain
Ain’t no party without Badshah! Everyone knows the lyrics and Sonam’s crazy dance moves to this party starter song, do I even need to explain why this is on the list?
12. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, title track
Salman Khan and Sonam’s hit film “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” had it all from action and comedy to romance. Sonam’s dance moves from the chorus of the films title track is officially legendary. Don’t believe me? Just look up how many dance-covers there are to this track.
13. Jalte Diya from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
“Jalte Diya” is written so well, one can’t help but fall in love with a raw and vulnerable Sonam as she tells her fiance how much she loves him. While she is being so open and giving, Salman Khan’s character battles with his love for Sonam and the truth about who he is. The way both actors express their emotions in this song is what makes this track so memorable.
