Imagine living on one of the most beautiful beaches in South Asia while also helming a cute bookstore. A luxury resort in the Maldives is hiring someone to do just that.
Luxury eco resort of Soneva Fushi is looking for a bookseller to run what The Guardian describes as “possibly the world’s most remote bookshop.” In addition to running the shop for a minimum of three months, the new hire is required to maintain “an entertaining and lively blog that captures the exhausting life of a desert island bookseller” and teach the occasional creative writing workshop.
“The pay is derisory but the fringe benefits unparalleled,” business owner Philip Blackwell, who is a member of the famed Blackwell booksellers family, said. “The role will evolve and it is in part up to you to make the most of this unique opportunity. It’s a dream job for many people. If I was 25 again I would do it.”
The Maldives has long been a favorite vacation destination of celebrities around the world. Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, and David and Victoria Beckham are among the stars who have enjoyed the island nation’s famed beaches.
While the pay is minimal, the position’s biggest benefit is the fact that the new hire will be able to live at the resort rent free. Rooms at the Soneva Fushi usually run at about $2,000 a night for a one bedroom suite to up to $26,000 to rent the resort’s Private Reserve, which is described as a “playful deserted-island mansion” that comes with its own swimming pool and sauna.
