The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist: The 'Traveling with Bae' Edition

If there’s one thing that makes us, the common people, feel like we’re in the movies, it’s driving the car and blasting the music; pretending we’re either in a car chase or in some romantic getaway with our partner, or just gazing out at the scenery, deep in thought.

You know what instigates this feeling? The best possible music. Somehow, it’s weird to imagine not playing songs when you’re on a long road trip. What, you’re just going to talk to the person? Or sleep in the passenger seat as your are being transported? God, no.

Road trips are meant to be fun. Who doesn’t love them? I know, I know, the thought of being stuck in the car for hours is scary and claustrophobic, but it really doesn’t have to be. Courtesy of some great music.

To make life easy for everyone, here’s the ultimate playlist for your road trip when you’re traveling with bae. It’s the best possible mix of Indian tracks and English music, of songs old and new. In fact, you’ll get to be your lazy self to such an extent because the songs are divided based on who you’re traveling with. All you have to do is press play as you sit in the car, and you’re gold. Of course, don’t be dancing with or gazing into your partner’s eyes that you don’t look at the road.

Ready? Steady? GO.

1. “OK Jaanu” - “OK Jaanu” (2017)

The title track of the recently released movie, starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, is sung by none other than A.R. Rehman. It’s a fun, romantic track that focuses on living without any stress and fear, just being in the moment. Basically, it’s perfect advice as you and your boo embark on this adventurous road trip together. Pro tip: sneaking in cute glances are totally allowed during

2. “Aao Milo Chalo” - “Jab We Met” (2007)

This sweet, slow, fun jam from one of the best movies of that year is perfect for your trip. In the movie, Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor are taking a trip via road after they missed their train while they argued on the station. The two are practically strangers and get to know each other in this song. However, the lyrics are more about the journey, the road itself; that the company of loved ones during the trip is better than reaching the destination itself.

3. “Kala Chashma” - “Baar Baar Dekho” (2016)

Literally, this is the most fun song of 2016. This movie actually gave us one thing to be happy about. Even if it’s not an original song, they’ve made a pretty groovy version. One that is perfect to dance to on your trip. Super important pro tip: To really feel it, both of you must wear your sunglasses as you gaze out of the window and give it your all when you sing.

4. “Matargashti” - “Tamasha” (2015)

From one of the more beautifully complex movies made by Imtiaz Ali and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, this song is best played when you and bae want something fun but also whacky enough to keep you from falling asleep. The best part is it’s quirky music, complete with quirkier lyrics and snuck in-between is a sweet ode to yesteryear songs. A.R. Rehman strikes again.

5. “Hey Soul Sister” - Train  (2009)

As we talk about fun but whacky lyrics, “Hey Soul Sister” is your best bet for a funky but saccharine enough tune. Sung by rock band Train, it reached top 3 in Billboard’s top 100 chart and earned a Grammy award for the band, rightly so. The lyrics have the ability to instantly make you happy and you will have the impulse to hold your partner’s hand during certain lyrics. (“you gave my life direction, a game show love connection, we can’t deny”!)

6. “Sooraj Dooba Hai” - “Roy”

Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez ooze all kinds of sexy vibes when it comes to the video of the song -- the slow driving, the eye winking, the charming grinning. While it’s not recommended to follow routine as the song plays in the background, feel free to appreciate its voyeuresness and glamorous music. All that is on the surface, however. The true magic of the song lies in the words, encouraging you to let go and enjoy on the journey of life...or, you know, the journey you’re taking right now.

7. “Hum Dono Do Premi” - “Ajnabee”

Another old but gold track, this one will not disappoint because it literally talks about how two lovers are leaving everything behind to be with one another as they hit the road. This, accompanied by it’s sweet sounding yesteryear musical notes make this a nice, sobering song to listen to as you drive.

8. “Where You Lead, I Will Follow” - Carole King

This song might be most well-known for being the theme song for “Gilmore Girls,” but don’t let that association fool you. It’s well-written and melodious song expresses the love shared by two people and the willingness to go wherever needed to be with them. Literally, the words say “I will go to the end of the world, cause darling, to me that’s what you’re worth.” Endearing and all kinds of beautiful.

9. “Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari” - “Chennai Express”

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone always set the screen on fire, and “Chennai Express” is no different. In the film, they play stark opposites who end up traveling in the train together and one after the other, a hilarious and chaotic situation ensues. What sticks is their developing relationship despite their differences, and that’s what this song emphasizes. You know, Kashmir aka the northernmost point of India is farthest from the Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the country. It’s a nice play on this fact.

10. “A Sky Full of Stars” - Coldplay

Coldplay is known for a variety of songs, but one of their recent ones, “A Sky Full of Stars” is an amazing, amorous song. It’s the perfect one to play as the sun is setting, to spark up the mood on your trip.
