Padmaavat’s famous song and dance “Ghoomar” has left quite the impression on dance professionals, dance teams, and amateur dancers alike, each offering their own routine of rhythmic twirls for a traditional Rajasthani dance made popular by the Bollywood hit.  As a collective audience, we’ve probably seen our fair share of colorful takes on the song by now. However, one artist in particular really stands out. Mayuri Bhandari is putting her own spin on the dance, quite literally, and is taking the Internet by storm!

So who is this Ice Queen? Take note, because we’re pretty confident we’ll be hearing her name more in the years to come with this much talent and drive in possession of one person.

Bhandari is an Indian-American actress, dancer, and figure skater.  As if that’s not enough talent, she’s also a cardio fitness instructor and co-founder of BollyX, a popular series of workouts combining Bollywood music and dance with high-intensity interval training. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We reached out to Bhandari, inquiring what made her gravitate towards “Ghoomar” in particular for her routine. She explained that it was important for her to bring together her two worlds and perform a Bollywood dance on such a unique platform. Bhandari told The Teal Mango:

“I heard ‘Ghoomar’ and, as I’m Rajasthani myself, I immediately felt the connection to the song on the ice. Just like the song, my skating has so many spins, turns in passion, expression, and love. In addition, I am a huge fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s music, artistry, sets, choreography, and cinematography style. I would love the opportunity to work with him as an actress someday. He is an artist, and I wanted to bring the heart of these beautiful songs and concepts to a newer space where it is not seen as much.”

This is not the first Bollywood-ice skating routine Bhandari has presented to the world. She has performed others, including “Nagada Sang Dhol” on the Indian show “Dare 2 Dance” with Akshay Kumar, making her skating performance the first of its kind on Indian television.

We can’t wait to see what other performances Bhandari has in store for us both on and off the ice. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, if you’re reading this, might we suggest changing it up a bit next time and making your next magnum opus on ice, with Bhandari as the lead?
