5 Classic Bollywood Songs That Need To Make a Comeback

August 11, 2017 Editorial     TheTealMango

Although there are many benefits to being a millennial—the availability of Netflix, Siri, and recipes for chocolate lava cake only a tap away—there are certainly many shortcomings. A perfect example is the fantastic Bollywood numbers that I’ve had to miss out on; this is why I’ve decided to take a blast to the past via Youtube (another benefit of the 21st century, HAY!)

On this journey to the past, I’ve collected these gems to reminisce and fall in love with… all over again.

Here are 5 Classic Bollywood Songs that need a comeback:

1. “Dil Deke Dekho”

This song is named after the super hit 1959 movie, “Dil Deke Dekho,” starring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. It’s no wonder the song is a classic—it was sung by the legend, Mohammed Rafi.

It’s basically the only song you can play and get anyone in a good mood: the composition is SO smooth and perfectly captures the 1960s in a nutshell. Let’s not forget the beautiful lyrics and tune that you will never stop humming.)

2. “Dukki Pe Dukki Ho Ya Satte Pe Satta”

Sung in the beautiful voices of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar, as well as Rahul Dev Burman, Bhupinder Singh, Sapan Chakravorty and Basu, this song is one of my favorites because it’s such a fun track! The tonal variety, as well as the kooky music video, make this video unforgettable.

To top it all off, this video unites us with a young Amitabh Bachchan and—my personal favorite ship—Hema Malini! We also see a young Ranjeeta Kaur, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Sachin, Gufi Paintal, Ranjeet, Vijayendra Ghatge and Sarika in the video!

Also, this song makes a banjo sound good. After seeing this video, I kind of wish I had five extra brothers with pretty girlfriends who like to burst into dance and song, while frolicking on mountains and fields—with Zayn Malik serenading me, of course.

3. “I Am a Disco Dancer”

“I Am a Disco Dancer” is remembered for its groundbreaking fusion of East and West—a unique feature at the time. The song, complete with its killer dance moves, is one you can’t help but jam to.

Not only is it the Hotline Bling of the 80s, it also teaches you how to spell D-I-S-C-O!

4. “Ek Do Teen”

Have you ever forgotten how to count? Fear not, Alka Yagnik’s voice paired with Madhuri Dixit’s killer moves will strike the knowledge back into you!

This song reminds me of my mother—who still sings it while stirring in the kitchen or driving. I can’t even blame her, the song is one of the catchiest of its time and will likely get stuck in your head with one play. The best part is that you won’t even mind.

5. “Ole Ole”

No, not the moisturizer. This song came out in 1994 and managed to stick with listeners. The video stars Saif Ali Khan—in all his frumpy leather jacket glory—dancing the night away to a contagious beat. I especially love this song because of how catchy and spontaneous it sounds: yes, it’s the song your Dad hums while cruising during road trips, but give him some credit. The song is so good, it makes me go, “ole ole ole!”

No, we’re not engineering a unique variety of mangoes. We are, however, producing a new wave of relatable content for a generation straddling two cultures.

Teal, an unexpected color for a mango, signifies nontraditional content, because, duh, mangoes are orange. But we don’t want to be common. We want to celebrate our global-South Asian commonality in a bolder, fresher way.
