American Show Desi Tadka Movie Edition: Our K3G Dream Cast!
I’m switching it up this month with a movie edition of my #AmericanShowDesiTadka series and recasting a Bollywood film with Hollywood actors.
I know, I just blew your mind, right?
Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” is one of my personal favorites. The film was perfectly cast and it is extremely hard to find the Hollywood counterparts of some of these iconic heroes and heroines. The film gave us an epic family, intense dialogues, adorable outfits, and classic songs that are still played at every shaadi 16 years later.
The Raichands taught us about parampara, how to take a chill-pill, to let strangers stay with you because they may secretly be the brother you haven’t seen in 10 years, that when your parents tell you to get out they really mean the opposite, that micro-mini-skirts and mismatched shoes are what fashionable people wear to college, the meaning of PHAT and singing the national anthem is the way to any desi mom’s heart.
So who can live up to the hype of K3G? Not many people fit the bill but I tried to find some stars who just might be able to bring the drama with equal parts corny jokes.
K3G Hollywood Re-cast:
Yashvardhan and Nandini Raichand: Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson
Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan were perfection as the patriarchs of this film. They were powerful yet vulnerable. Keaton and Nicholson are hilarious actors who can be serious when needed as well. We already know they have great chemistry from their hit film, “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Rahul Raichand and Anjali Sharma: Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are easily the most beautiful on-screen couple who share an unparalleled chemistry. For such an epic on and off screen jodi, we need a couple that is equal parts a-dork-able and sexy. Real-life husband and wife team Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively fit the role perfectly!
They are both adorable, funny, and the duo are such epic #CoupleGoals!
Krish Raichand: August Maturo
Cutie Jibraan Khan played Anjali and Rahul’s son, Krish. There aren’t too many child actors who are so young, talented and adorable as Khan but one little star does come to mind. Have you checked out 9-year-old August Maturo as Auggie Matthews on “Girl Meets World?”
It would be fitting that the actor who plays the son of one of the most loved on-screen couples Topanga and Cory Matthews (of the hit show “Boy Meets World”) takes on the same position in Bollywood. Maturo is too cute and he’d complete this gorgeous family.
Rohan Raichand and Pooja Sharma: Ashton Kutcher
Chubster-turned-hottie Rohan Raichand—played by Hrithik Roshan— is tall, handsome, funny and overly emotional. Doesn’t remind you of Ashton Kutcher from “That 70’s Show?”
Who could forget the iconic character of “Poo” aka Pooja Sharma played by Kareena Kapoor Khan? Pooja was witty, ditzy, girly, materialistic, the most popular girl in school and yet she did have an insecure side she kept hidden.
If we’re bringing on Kutcher, we’ve just got to pair him with Mila Kunis! Kunis’ role in “That 70’s Show” is also quite similar to Pooja so we already know she has the skills to play the hot popular girl.
Naina: Emma Stone
Poor friend-zoned Naina is gorgeous, sweet, innocent and kind—who else but award-winning actress Emma Stone to take on that role? Stone is sweet and endearing, she would look adorable as an-almost-couple with Ryan Reynolds.
Also, her work in “La La Land” just showed us that she’s definitely got the skills for the song and dance routine of Bollywood.
Daijaan: Julie Andrews
Farida Jalal was the sweetest Daijaan, even though her character, Sayeeda, was essentially the nanny Sayeeda still showered the boys with so much love just as a mother would. Who else could play a better nanny than the most epic nanny of all, Mary Poppins!
Julie Andrews starred in the film as Mary Poppins and her iconic role is still loved by all. There was no doubt that the ultimate nanny should play Daijaan herself.
Dadi: Betty White
Rohan and Rahul’s paternal grandma was a feisty woman even at her old age and her unfortunate passing is what finally brought Rahul back to India so her dying wish was finally complete.
The much loved Golden Girl, Betty White is the perfect dadi to bring this family together. Bless her she’s got so much fire, there’s no one else like her.
Nani: Meryl Streep
While Rahul and Rohan’s paternal grandma was elderly, their maternal grandmother prided herself on being just a few years younger. She was just as feisty but definitely more sarcastic and slightly deluded about her age.
Meryl Streep could be an awesome nani as she can definitely pull off nani’s sarcastic lines with a straight face. Plus who wouldn’t want to see Queens like Streep and White kill it on the big screen?
