27 Bollywood Films of 2017 We're Excited to Watch

As we continue speeding into 2017, a slew of Bollywood films await to be loved, hated, picked on, torn apart, devoured, enjoyed, and cried over. We take a look at the ones for which we're already keeping the popcorn ready.

There’s intense drama and there’s light-hearted humor, there’s lots of love and there’s puzzling thrillers. We et some new on-screen pairs like Ayushman Khurana and Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor. A few notable actors are missing, however, including Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, John Abraham, and Abhishek Bachchan.

Here's what to expect from the film industry this year:

1. “Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya”

Starring: Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan

Director: Shashank Khaitan

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Release Date: March 10

This film continues the 2014 romcom gold “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya” franchise, which also starred Bhatt and Dhawan. They play Badrinath and Vaidehi, respectively. Badrinath hails from Jhansi and it’s about his journey. Dhawan has described it as a grown up version of “Humpty” and not a sequel. This film has a fresher look, and is supposed to have some dark and twisty turns as well. Humpty was a surprising but delightful movie, which gave both its actors a chance to shine as a pair post “Student of the Year.” Let’s hope this movie goes the same route!

2. “Begum Jaan”

×

Starring: Vidya Balan, Gauhar Khan

Director: Srijit Mukherjee

Genre: Historical Drama

Release Date: March 17

Not only does this movie star the talented Balan, it also reunited her with “Dirty Picture” co-star Naseeruddin Shah. The movie has a compelling, unique plot. It focuses on a brothel at the time of the India-Pakistan partition. Eleven prostitutes refuse to part ways with what has become their home and family. Other stars include Khan, Chunky Pandey, and Pallavi Sharda (“Lion”). With this cast and Mukherjee at the helm, here’s hoping this movie doesn’t disappoint.

3. “Sarkar 3”

Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Yami Gautam

Director: Ram Gopal Verma

Genre: Drama

Release Date: March 17

In Bachchan’s most Frank Underwood-like role, he plays Subhash Nagre aka Sarkar, a powerful political figure who thrives on exploitation. The first two films of this series, “Sarkar” (2005) and “Sarkar Raj” (2008) explored the political family based in Mumbai. It became an actual family affair, with Abhishek Bachchan starring in both the films and his wife Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan playing a pivotal role in the second film. However, neither of them return for the third. Senior Bachchan will instead be joined by Bajpayee, Gautam, Jackie Shroff, and Ronit Roy. “Sarkar 3” will continue to take us along with Nagre on his journey to exact justice using all the wrong ways.

4. “Phillauri”

Starring: Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma

Director: Anshai Lal

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Release Date: March 24

Set in the town of Phillaur, Punjab, this comedy will explore the romantic tales between Sharma and Dosanjh, who made his Bollywood debut in 2016 with “Udta Punjab.” Sharma, best known for “Life of Pi,” will be seen opposite Mehreen Pirzada, who’s a newcomer in the South film industry. The romance story is supposed to be unique because Sharma will apparently be playing a ghost! A love story from beyond, can it get more classic Bollywood? Except the cast for this film is so fun, it’s bound to be infused by freshness and some humor.

5. “Hindi Medium”

Starring: Irrfan Khan, Saba Qamar

Director: Saket Choudhary

Genre: Romance

Release Date: March 31

If Khan himself doesn’t sell you enough, the story probably will, because you just know he is going to absolutely nail his performance. Khan and Qamar play a couple living in Delhi who want to be a part of the high profile community in Chandni Chowk. This light-hearted romance is sure to win hearts because of the chemistry of our protagonists.

6. “Jagga Jasoos”

Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif

Director: Anurag Basu

Genre: Drama

Release Date: April 7

In this kind of fantastical, kind of goofy film, Kapoor plays Jagga. He’s a gifted detective who’s in search of his father. The trailer of the movie has left audiences confused but also intrigued about what to expect, especially since this movie has been delayed for a while now. The one thing we know for sure? Even though they may have broken up in real life, Kapoor and Kaif share an undeniable chemistry on-screen, which will contribute to it’s success.

7. “Noor”

Starring: Sonakshi Sinha, Kanan Gill

Director: Sunhil Sippy

Genre: Dramedy

Release Date: April 21

This movie has such a wonderfully odd cast, it’s almost a formula for success. Sinha plays Noor, a journalist who has some great adventures. Her co-stars include Gill, a successful comedian of “TK” fame, Gareth Lawrence (“The Last Kill”), and Sunny Leone. In this drama/comedy, Sinha will bring to the screen her humorous, adorkable side as the lead hero, not as a side-piece in some ridiculous comedy. We can’t wait!

8. “Meri Pyaari Bindu”

Starring: Ayushman Khurana, Parineeti Chopra

Director: Akshay Roy

Genre: Romance

Release Date: May 12

In their first movie together, Chopra will play a love interest for Khurana’s character, a horror novelist. The movie was shot in Kolkata, West Bengal. This will be Chopra’s first movie after 2014’s “Kill Dil,” although she did a dance number alongside Varun Dhawan in 2016’s “Dishoom.” She will make her singing debut through this movie, as well. Chopra is a fierce, talented actress who has been in the media for her body image more than her skill. Let’s hope this movie finally changes that.

9. “Half Girlfriend”

Starring: Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor

Director: Mohit Suri

Genre: Romance Drama

Release Date: May 19

Based on a book by Chetan Bhagat, considered as coming-of-age in India, the movie will aim to depict the same. Madhav, a boy from Bihar, enrolls in highly accredited college and falls in love with a rich, high-class Delhi girl Riya, who doesn’t want a relationship so decides to be his half-girlfriend. As most modern relationships do not conform to norms, this movie has the potential to stir up funny but meaningful insights.

10. “Tubelight”

A post shared by Kabir Khan (@kabirkhankk) on

Starring: Salman Khan, Zhu Zhu

Director: Kabir Khan

Genre: Action Drama

Release Date: June 26 (Eid, so, of course)

Releasing on Eid this year is another Khan blockbuster. In this historical action piece based on the 1962 Sino-Indian war, Khan will play a man who falls in love with a Chinese woman. Sohail Khan will return on-screen to portray real life brother’s reel brother as well. Beloved actor Om Puri, who passed away on Jan 5, 2017, will also be seen in the movie.

11. “Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai”

#Haseena

A post shared by Shraddha ~ (@shraddhakapoor) on

Starring: Shraddha Kapoor, Sharman Joshi

Director: Apoorva Lakhia

Genre: Biographical

Release Date: July 14

The biopic, based on the life of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar, will star Kapoor in the lead role after Sonakshi Sinha opted out of the project. Her real-life brother Siddhant Kapoor will portray Ibrahim whereas Joshi will play the pivotal role of a cop.

12. “Chef”

Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dulipalha

Director: Raja Krishna Menon

Genre: Family Drama

Release Date: July 14

Based on the Hollywood movie of the same name, which starred Jon Favreau and Sofia Vergara in leading roles, the Hindi version will mostly be a straight-up remake with a desi twist. Khan will play a talented but neurotic chef who rediscovers his passion for cooking after he quits his job and opens his food truck. At the same time, he navigates through troubles at home.

13. “Bareilly Ki Barfi”

#BareillykiBarfi coming to spread some sweetness on 21st July 2017!! Woohhoo!!

A post shared by Kriti (@kritisanon) on

Starring: Ayushman Khurana, Kriti Sanon, Rajkumar Rao

Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Release Date: July 21

In this sweet romcom set in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Khurana will play the owner of a printing press. Rao plays the role of his employer. The two fall into a love triangle as they fall for Sanon’s character, a contemporary woman living in their town. The movie’s appeal lies in the simplicity of the actors and the backdrop, with no big budget banner attached to it. Hopefully, it’ll focus more on the story than the glamor.

14. “Mubarakan”

And it's begun !!! #Mubarakan

A post shared by Arjun Kapoor (@arjunkapoor) on

Starring: Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor,

Director: Anees Bazmee

Genre: Comedy

Release Date: July 28

Get ready to LOL throughout this film, because we’re going to see the Kapoor relatives fully go for it in this Bazmee production, who is known for movies like “No Entry,” and “Welcome.” Both the Kapoor’s will play uncle-nephew in the movie. Arjun, in fact, will be seen in a double role as Karanveer and Charanveer singh. Ileana D’Cruz and Athiya Shetty will play the female leads in the movie.

15. “The Ring” (tentative title)

Mark your calendar - 11th August 2017. What you seek.... is seeking you. @iamsrk #ImtiazAli

A post shared by AnushkaSharma1588 (@anushkasharma) on

Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma

Director: Imtiaz Ali

Genre: Romance

Release Date: August 11

Everything about this movie screams success! First up, King Khan, hello. Secondly, Ali’s movies have never disappointed. From “Love Aaj Kal” to “Tamasha,” there’s always great romance and meaning to his films. Plus, Sharma and Khan share wonderful chemistry. This romantic movie is also bound to be scenic as it’s shot in Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, and Punjab. I’m ready for this. Can it be August already?

16. “Reload”

#songday #funday #miamilove #vitaminsea @s1dofficial

A post shared by Jacqueline Fernandez (@jacquelinef143) on

Starring: Siddharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez

Director: Raj and D.K.

Genre: Action

Release Date: August 25

Behold, the apparent sequel to 2014’s “Bang Bang.” The original starred Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif (and wasn’t really original because it was the remake of Hollywood film “Knight and Day”). This action-packed movie will see our leads romance each other and also seek thrills and action stunts. Suniel Shetty also stars in the movie.

17. “Badshaho”

Every saint has a past... Every sinner has a future. @baadshaho. 1st September.

A post shared by Ajay Devgn (@ajaydevgn) on

Starring: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi

Director: Milan Luthria

Genre: Historical Thriller

Release Date: September 1

Boasting a wonderful cast, the movie is a historical drama, taking place during the Emergency period in India during the 70s. Devgn plays a thief in the film, Hashmi an army officer, along with Vidyut Jamwal’s undercover cop. They are tasked with protecting stolen gold. Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta will also star in the film, with Rajasthan as the backdrop for it. Color me intrigued!

18. “Simran”

Starring: Kangana Ranaut, Sohum Shah

Director: Hansal Mehta

Genre: Family Drama

Release Date: September 15

A movie that has to balance solely on the shoulders of Ranaut? We already know, then, it’s going to be an elaborate success. In this film, she plays the titular role of Simran, a Gujarati woman living in the US. She’s also a 30-year old divorcee, which already implies the film will tackle certain taboo topics when it comes to relationships. The film is fully shot in Atlanta, Georgia. As her co-stars, Ranaut has Sohum Shah (“Talvar”) and Mark Justice (“Jason Bourne”).

19. “Judwaa 2”

Starring: Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez

Director: David Dhawan

Genre: Comedy

Release Date: September 29

In the era when several famous old Bollywood movies are being remade and getting sequels, you just know “Judwaa” had to be done. Dhawan plays the lead hero, which fits perfectly because his goofy but strong personality represents Salman Khan, who led the original, and will make a cameo in this one, too, reprising both his famous roles as Prem and Raja. His love interest from the original, Karishma Kapoor, will also make an appearance. When it comes to the ladies Dhawan will be seen romancing, Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu (“Pink”) play the leads. If this film is even half as hilarious as the original, mostly thanks to Khan’s acting (he didn’t just punch people back in the day), count us in.

20. “Aankhen 2”

Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal, Anil Kapoor

Director: Anees Bazmee

Genre: Thriller

Release Date: October 19

2002’s “Aankhen” was a true blockbuster. Starring Bachchan along with Rampal, Akshay Kumar, and Paresh Rawal, this thriller was intense and kept us on the edge of our seat. For the sequel, Kumar, Rawal or Sushmita Sen will not come back. However, we get Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, and Ileana D’Cruz this time around. The plot will almost parallel the original, wherein three men: one blind, one mute, one deaf were roped in by the head of a bank to rob it.

21. “2 Point 0”

And the BATTLE begins! Get set for a #3Diwali2017 with #2Point0

A post shared by Akshay Kumar (@akshaykumar) on

Starring: Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar

Director: Shankar

Genre: Science Fiction

Release Date: October 19

In this sci-fi drama, considered as the successor for 2010’s “Enthiran,” South Indian superstar, okay fine, God aka Rajnikanth will reprise his role as Dr. Vaseegaran and Chitti the robot. Kumar is slated to play the villain in the movie after several actors refused, including Hollywood hero Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hrithik Roshan, and Aamir Khan. While “Enthiran” actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will do a cameo in the film, the lead actress is Amy Jackson. More than anything, we’re excited to see Kumar make his Tamil movie debut in a never-seen-before avatar.

22. “Golmaal Again”

Starring: Ajay Devgn, Tushar Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra

Director: Rohit Shetty

Genre: Comedy

Release Date: October 19

Truly, this is the year of sequels. After three successful films of the “Golmaal” franchise, with Devgn and Kapoor as the leads, we’re getting a fourth film! After Kareena Kapoor played the lead in the previous two films, Chopra will now step into her shoes. Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, and Kunal Khemu are rumored to reprise their roles from previous movies. Basically, let’s expect a whole lot of chaos resulting in a whole lot of laughs.

23. “Padmavati”

A glimpse of @deepikapadukone in this stunning outfit for her performance is enough to leave us wanting for more! #IIFA2016 -Team DP

A post shared by Deepika Padukone (@deepikapadukone) on

Starring: Deepika Padukone, Ranvir Singh, Shahid Kapoor

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Genre: Period Drama

Release Date: November 17

One of the most awaited films of 2017 will see on-screen relationship goals Padukone and Singh in their third epic movie together after “Ram Leela” and “Bajirao Mastani.” This time, Bhansali has roped in Shahid Kapoor to play the protagonist as well. Based on the life of Rani Padmavati, the film is set during the 1303 siege of the Chittor fort in Rajasthan by Alaudin Khilji (Singh). His desire for invasion? To capture the queen, who is married to ruler of Mewar, Rana Ratan Singh (Kapoor). Oof, I can already imagine the grandeur in costumes, sets, dialogues, acting. To top it all, Padukone will be seen performing a traditional Ghoomar dance. Cannot wait for this drama to play out on-screen.

24. “Tumhari Sulu”

another film... another journey.... set to begin.... with the fun team of #TumhariSulu🎙....❤😍😘💃🏻

A post shared by Vidya Balan (@balanvidya) on

Starring: Vidya Balan

Director:

Genre: Dramedy

Release Date: December 1

Balan will take a break from her the intense tone of her recent films to play a light-hearted, lovable radio jockey of a late night show in this movie. Her feisty character’s show is actually semi-adult and voyeuristic in nature. Balan describes this role as an enjoyable one, calling Sulu a lemon: you need that zest. If there is one thing we know about her, it’s that she immerses herself in the movie completely. There’s no doubt this film will be no different.

25. “Tiger Zinda Hai”

×

Starring: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif

Director: Kabir Khan

Genre: Action

Release Date: December 22

If the title didn’t already tell you, Tiger is alive and well, all geared up for a sequel to “Ek Tha Tiger.” In the original movie, both Khan and Kaif play spies from India and Pakistan respectively. The movie will focus on them and will speak to India’s place in the current world, while adding political espionage into the mix. The actors will share screen space together after five years, so totally expect fireworks to happen, much like in the first film.

26. “Mom”

Starring: Sridevi, Akshay Khanna

Director: Ravi Udyawar

Genre: Drama

Release Date: TBD

We need more Sridevi in our life. Her comeback film “English Vinglish” was proof. Luckily for us, she’ll be seen in “Mom,” touted as a women-centric film. She’ll play a mom who is constantly in conflict with her 18-year-old step-daughter. Pakistani actors Sajal Ali and Adnan Siddiqui will play pivotal roles in the movie, as will Khanna, whose comeback film in 2016, “Dishoom,” earned him praise even though the movie did not impress. Let the drama and crying begin!

27. “Padman”

#PadMan #2017

A post shared by Akshay Kumar (@akshaykumar) on

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor

Director: Sabbir Khan

Genre: Biopic

Release Date: TBD

This movie has ‘hit’ written all over it. Firstly, the talented cast includes Kumar, Kapoor, and Radhika Apte. It is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of the first low-cost sanitary pads in India. Kumar will play him aka Padman in the movie, which is the first film being produced under his Twinkle Khanna’s banner, Mrs. Funnybones Productions. Rumor has it that Amitabh Bachchan will also show up in the movie. Let’s call it: it’s going to be the best movie of 2017 just for its bold, much-needed approach to such a taboo topic in the country.
